I'm attempting to create an htaccess and an htpassword file for some of the directories on my server, yet I am having a problem. I have no clue how to create the file because Windows says that I need a file name. How can I get by this?

An htaccess file is a simple ASCII file, such as you would create through a text editor like NotePad. Many people seem to have some confusion over the naming convention for the file, so let me get that out of the way

.htaccess is the file extension. It is not file.htaccess or somepage.htaccess, it is simply named .htaccess

.htaccess is a Linux/Unix thing, windows will not let rename a file to .htaccess.

Create a text file with the name htaccess; no file extension. Add what lines you need to the file then upload it to your server, in ASCII mode. Once the file has been uploaded remame to .htaccess and CHMOD 644.
