How To Determine Pc Usb Speed (2.0? 3.0?)

Searched, no hits. Probably too simple a question. I clicked all over Device manager, etc. and could not find where the speed of my USB ports is listed. Running Win 7. Want to order a memory stick and don't know if a USB 3.0 one will work on my two PCs.

USB 2.0 controllers should be described as 'Enhanced' in Device Manager, USB 3.0 controllers should be listed as USB 3.0.

Using the View > Devices by Connection:

 

My device manager does not list the devices as seen in the posted image. No PCI bus.

It occurred to me after I posted that maybe I should have asked - "Is a USB 3.0 memory stick backward compatible with a USB 2.0 port?" If that is the case then if I buy a USB 3.0 memory stick it will run (albeit a bit slower) when inserted into a USB 2.0 port. True?

Did you change the Device Manager view, it's useful to check exactly what connects where?

Yes, USB 3.0 is designed to be backwards compatible, the three (still hidden) USB Input Devices in my screenshot are all USB 1.1.

 

No, I couldn't find that to select in any drop down menu. At age 80 I may be getting too old for this kind of thing (wandering around inside Win7). I started using a PC back before there was any Windows.

Problem solved and I can order the USB 3.0 memory stick and gets something that works.

 

USB3 memory sticks are not as fast as you might think. Some no better than USB2 speeds.
