How to find out if a website is legit?

I may know this, but right now I'm sitting here on narcotics with a fractured foot and have the attention span of a gnat, so I'm just gonna ask for help.

I know if you have the address of a business you can go to the BBB to find out if they're legit, but what if you only have a website? My niece is trying to find a rent-to-own house and if this is legit it would be fabulous, but I don't have a clue how to find out other than just hitting Google.

    This is the place: http://hopetoown.com/#back

Typically doing a search on a company yields something. I found nothing. Well, I found one thing: http://www.scambook.com/company/view/102280/HopeToOwncom Honestly, I can't figure out what it is though.

They are definitely not BBB accredited, although they don't have to be.

The fact that there is no info readily available would make me very leery about doing anything with personal info that's involved in loans and such.

Maybe someone can help you better.

On a sidenote, I would be extremely careful with any Rent to Own anything and know exactly what you are getting into.

Excellent, thank you! It set off both of our internal scam alarms, and I think I really wanted to tell her not to, but I wanted backup from someone who can think straight.

It's a sad, sad day when I'm too stupid to figure something this easy out. I now live in fear my mother's computer will have an issue. :-o

I always check the whois information on websites. This one looks like it's been in operation since 2011, which isn't a long time but was updated in August of this year.

You could check out the person's name who's tied to this domain and see if there are any bad things floating out there in the internet.

That domain was registered to a company in Canada but expired in 2012 which is why it's not active.

This whole thing is super shady, I'd stay far away.

Is this a new foot injury, or flare up on the one from a few years back?

I have residual pain from an injury not properly treated 12 years ago.

Here is hoping you recover quickly! ;)

Thank you! This is a new one. Last Wednesday night at work I dropped a steel plate on edge across my entire left foot. I'm having surgery to piece it back together with plates and screws next week Friday, but in the mean time I'm on these drugs which leave me with the attention span of a gnat and a distinct inability to pull information out of my brain that I know darn well is in there somewhere.

Today I fully intended to make tuna melts on English muffins for lunch. By the time I got done making tuna salad, I forgot about that, so I ate it on crackers. Like that. rolleyes

    Whoa.

Must have been a hefty plate...did it literally pancake your foot?

Would've, had it been flat (they're 18 inches square by 1/2 inch thick). Instead, it made a line across the base of my toes, so my poor toes are NOT the shape or position they used to be in. Most of the fractures they can't do anything about, but my big toe is not exactly attached by bone right now, so that's what they're concentrating on.

That'll teach me to think, "heck, this is just a corporate meeting loadout in the ballrooms, I don't need to wear my steel toes tonight". :banghead

I would suggest that your daughter contact some local realtors.

Oh boy, I can't even begin to imagine how much that must have hurt. Hope you get well soon!
