    When we drag/drop a website address/shortcut/icon to the desktop, is there a way to find/get the image/icon file associated with the shortcut ?

    Hi

    I take it this PC is the Windows XP one in your sigline?

    AS far as I know many icons from websites that actually have one will drag and drop to the desktop ok and keep their companies logo, (I just tried for Apple Uk and it kept the Apple logo) but if the site doesn't then you would have to search for an .ico file image that was from the site you need, then all you would do is right click the URL shortcut file, choose Properties and then Change Icon, browse for the saved icon and your off.

    But you would need to keep all the icons in a folder as the path to the icon file will always been needed as they are not embedded.

    Do you have a sample of a website in question?

    Thank you for the reply.
    Yes, am aware of the properties/change icon process.
    What we would like to do is to find the 'logo' image file (jpg, bmp, tif, ico, etc) that is displayed by the website shortcut so we may save it as an ico file in our icons folder and use it with the properties/change icon process for displaying associated folders/files in XP.
    Eg, might it be in a specific internet temp folder/file in the XP folder system ?

    Greetings, akm.

    I'm assuming you're referring to the favicon.ico. Probably the simplest way is to save the web page (you'll need to save it as 'Web Page, Complete'), then look in the saved page's parent folder - there should be a favicon listed there.

    Many websites put the favicon image file in the root/home directory of their web page files on their web server. So, in those cases, you can display the favicon in a separate browser tab by, for example, going to http://www.majorgeeks.com/favicon.ico.

    So, try going to the home page and typing favicon.ico after the / and then hit Enter. Of course, if the site put the favicon in a sub-folder on the web server, you would need to know the path to that folder.

    In addition, you can find the favicon.ico file, by opening up the web shortcut in notepad.

    For example, for google:

    Code:
    [{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    Prop4=31,Google
    Prop3=19,2
    [{A7AF692E-098D-4C08-A225-D433CA835ED0}]
    Prop5=3,0
    [InternetShortcut]
    URL=http://www.google.com/
    IDList=
    IconFile=http://www.google.com/favicon.ico
    IconIndex=1
    [{9F4C2855-9F79-4B39-A8D0-E1D42DE1D5F3}]
    Prop5=8,Microsoft.Website.9CB8E698.8730F9E8

    You can see that the iconfile is pointing to google.com/favicon.ico
    So, essentially, what usafveteran has pointed out is correct. :)
