How To Format Xbox One Hdd To Use On Any Pc

Hello, I left my xbox one in storage for a few years and my brother in law found it and dropped it on a hard surface. The motherboard is toast as well as every other component except for the internal HDD. I'ts a 500gb drive and I want to make it into external storage for use on any pc. I plugged it into my Ubuntu box via usb/sata drive tool and it spins up fine and is still a healthy disk. The disk management tool that comes with Ubuntu recognizes it but will not allow me to format this drive. I tried G-parted as well to no avail. I did some digging around the internet and could only find ways to format a new drive to work in the xbox one, I want to do the reverse of that. So how do I unlock this drive so I can format it in Ubuntu?

 

Ok so I figured out how to do this it was very simple. All I had to do was go to Seagate website type in serial number of drive,and download their Disk wizard software for this disk on my windows machine. I ran it repartitioned the drive and now it works as external logical drive! Not sure why I was not able to accomplish this using G-parted on my Ubuntu machine though.

Hopefully another member can provide an explanation as to why it couldn't be formatted the conventional way.

 

It is most likely an LVM drive/partition so you would need to deactivate the lock using the command lvremove
Then you should be able to format the drive using gparted within Ubuntu!
