How to get an avi file to a dvd disc?

i have a video file on my computer that is a .avi file, i want to know what i need to do to put this file onto a blank dvd? i then want to play the disc in a home dvd player. i have roxio and dvd decrpyter already on the computer. any help is appreciated.

 

Converting a multi-media file like AVI to DVD just creates a data file. If you burn it on a DVD or VCD, you create data DVD, not a movie format that you can watch as a movie. To create a movie DVD, you need authoring software so you can play it on your DVD player and watch it on your TV.

You could try Smart DVD Creator. I have not used it and it's not free. I am sure someone else knows of better software. Google AVI to DVD and see what comes up.

I have not used Roxio in forever. Nero has a movie component that encodes the avi & burns the disc - if you looking to spend some $.

In a nutshell you have to encode the video from avi to a dvd compliant MPEG and use some DVD creation software.
