How To Get Recovery Drive To Boot Off Usb Flash Drive

System: Windows 10 Home, version 22H2, latest build
Laptop: HP 17-BY1053DX

I created a recovery drive on a USB flash drive. To test that the recovery drive was correctly created, I shut down the laptop, plugged in the flash drive, & rebooted. The laptop did not boot off the flash drive but followed the normal boot process and booted off the hard drive.

Windows did not report any errors when creating the recovery drive so I am assuming the recovery drive was properly created.

Perhaps I do not have the boot order configured correctly? Attached are 2 pictures of the configuration screen. Is the boot order correctly listed so that the laptop would try booting off the USB drive before booting off the hard drive? If this order is incorrect, what is the correct order?

"USB diskette" should be first for booting from a USB device.

If that throws an error, you should describe the type of recovery, HP, Windows or other.

There might be times when the RE partition on the drive is in the wrong place or missing altogether, then it gets more complex.

 

Thank you - your replies solved my problem. I was able to move USB Diskette to the top of the list. Tested the USB recovery drive and the laptop did indeed boot off the USB.

Which reminds me that there are other ways to enable this, like directly from recent Windows versions (8-11) and to use USB2 ports if no luck via USB3.
