How to get rid of Clicking Noise?

I have the clicking noise when clicking a link in IE or or some windows items(running XP).
I have followed the steps I read on other forums:
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds Tab > Windows Explorer > Start Navigation
From there I change the "Start Navigation" sound from "Windows XP Startup" to (NONE), I apply it and click OK. When I go back in it is reset to "Windows XP Startup". I have tried to save it as a sound scheme in the top of that Sounds window but it always resets. Everything is resetting immediatly, the clicks do not go away at all.
Any ideas?

 

Try creating another user in Windows. Then go through those same steps and see if the sound stays off. If it does, then you know you have a corrupt user profile and it's just not keeping your settings.

 

Yes, that seems to be the problem. I switched users and it changed the settings just fine. How to I fix the problems with the user profile?

One of the big questions asked over and over again! LOL

When something esoteric like this happens, there many times is not fix. The profile is corrupt and you start with a fresh one.

What you can do now, is copy your files over to the new profile and once everything looks o.k. delete the problematic one. That in essence is the "fix". :wave
