My friend found a laptop and wanted to know how to find out who it belongs to. Any ideas?

Sort of a no brainer. Drop it off at the police department. Odds are the person assumed it was stolen and reported it, unless it was hot to begin with.

First, your friend should call the police, to see if it's been reported stolen. On the bottom there should be a serial number, which if the owner registered it will tell the company that produced it to whom it belongs.

You don't happen to be in West Michigan, by any chance, do you? Mine was stolen last summer. :)

I think it's more of a wanting to know who it belongs to because she found it in her husband's things and he told her a story that doesn't add up thing. I said certain programs you put on like Word (if that's even on it) are registered to the owner of the computer. But she's bringing it by here around 12:30 for me to try and help her identify the owner. Oh, and by the way..it's in PA...sorry!

I stick to my guess, probably stolen, but we still only know bits and pieces from where we sit. Depending on the machine, what Sgt Tibbs said is correct. The laptop probably has the persons name on it somewhere (boot up, email, word documents) and possibly company identification. Start, recent documents might list recently opened items that may give a clue otherwise, open the email (offline) and see what you see I guess.

Unless of course, the whole of Windows is password protected, in which case, you're back to the serial No. thing.
