How to input Win7 password

When I cranked up the preinstalled Win7 on my Lenovo T520 I had the option of starting it up using only the fingerprint sensor - which is what I did.

Now I am finding that there are a number of things that require an actual password, but I can find no way to set up one. The only thing I find is how to change a password and you need to have a password before you can change it.... My user page won't let me in beca sensor.use it says it is password protected, but there is no password. And I think this may be the reason I keep getting Access Denied errors on so many things.

There is a place I found where Win7 will actually reveal your password, given a certain level of admin. I clicked that and it showed me a picture of the fingerprint sensor.

Anybody know how to put a password into Win7 at this point?

When you said "there are a number of things that require an actual password", are you talking about the UAC dialog box that requests an admin password?

Frankly I have no idea what a UAC dialog is.

I can't access my own user file. I was blocked out of a folder under my own admin user name a couple days ago. I tried to make a new folder under my own admin user name and I didn't have "permission" for that. I dragged a folder with my name on it onto the desktop so I could get to it quicker. I went into that and when I hit My documents, 3 of the folders there denied me access. At least one of those is accessible by going a different route. If Win7 requires you to dig around until I can find a specific route that lets you into your own files, I'm very sorry to have Win7.

I can't even remember how many times I have been just trying to familiarize myself with the system, clicking here and there, and getting MANY errors saying You do not have permission for that, Access Denied. How can an admin not have permission to go anywhere he wants?? It makes no sense to me. The only thing I can think of is that it is because I have no actual password, rather go into Win7 via fingerprint sensor.

And I've seen bushels of utilities for passwords - ALL of which require you to have an existing password to work with.

There may be a more elegant solution but one way would be to create a new user account with administrative privileges. Then log into that user and go to Control Panel >User Accounts and you should be able to remove the password from your usual account. Then you can go back to your usual account and set a text password if you like. The new extra account can then be deleted from your usual account if you wish.

I'll see if I can wrap my feeble mind around that.

Basically, go to Control Panel>User Accounts then choose Manage Another Account then choose Create Account. Choose a name and make sure that you give the new account Administrative privileges.

Log off your current account then sign into the account you just created. Go back to Control Panel> User Accounts and select Manage Another Account. Choose your usual account and then Remove Password.

So now your usual account should have no password. Sign into it to check. Then you can create a new text password for it if you like. And you can delete the temporary administrative account if you no longer want it--again back in Control Panel> User Accounts>Manage Another Account.

Just thought if you didn't want to create a new admin account you could enable the built in one instead:

Start/Orb then type in cmd in the search box but don't hit enter. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the search results. Right-click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator. A black command window opens.
Type or copy/paste net user administrator /active:yes into the window and hit enter. Then close the window.
Restart or logoff your current user and then login to the now visible Administrator account from the Welcome screen.
Follow the directions in my previous post to remove the password from your current account.

When finished with everything and back on your usual account, you can disable the builtin Administrator account with the command net user administrator /active:no so that it no longer appears on the Welcome screen.

It is up to you which seems easier.

Super. That got it. :hyperNow I can start Win7 with either a password or the fingerprint scanner.

I wonder why none of the _many_ password utility "experts" I read didn't come up with that idea... I used to be able to come up with stuff like that, but the kids presiding over today's computer world shouldn't have scrambled brains yet. :rasberry
