how to network?

maybe a n00b question, but here goes anyways...

i want to share all my media files from my downstairs puter (wired internet connection) to my upstairs puter (wireless connection)

how would i do that?

also, is it possible to share a internet connection between 2 computers via the ethernet connection if one computer is connected to the internet wirelessly?

 

You would need to allow file sharing, and tell the downstairs one how to share the folder. If sharing is activated, in Windows, right-click the folder, choose Properties, and click the Sharing tab to set up how to share it. If the tab isn't there, you need to activate sharing. That's probably in the Network control panel. You should see a button or something for file and print sharing.

For the other computer to get the files, just click Network Neighborhood on the desktop, choose the name of the downstairs computer, and it should show the folder you are sharing.

Also, Internet Connection Sharing could be used to share the Internet connection of one computer to another, but the best way to share Internet is probably getting a (wireless) router that can connect to the Internet and share to each computer independently.

 

does it matter if my upstairs computer has windows xp pro and my downstairs computer has windows xp home?

i set up everything right (i think), and other than my wireless router, my upstairs puter's "my network places" doesn't show any other computers.

 

They need to both be in the same workgroup. That should be in the Network control panel. The workgroup name needs to be the same on both computers. Also, only computers that share resources are displayed. Unless the downstairs computer has sharing files/printers enabled, it won't show up. (It may also need to have a folder or printer shared to show up, rather than just sharing enabled. When sharing a file/folder, you should be asked to give it a name to show to other computers and access information, such as read-only, full access, or password protected.)
