How To Really Kill Idm

I use Internet Download Manager from time to time, but see no need for it to be always 'at the ready'. When I click on 'exit' in the context menu of its icon in the Notification Area, it disappears only momentarily, but it
immediately returns. Is there a way to get it to REALLY exit ?

    download the systernals programs.
    https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_sysinternals_suite.html
in it, is a program called process explorer, awesome program.
it is a task manager on steroids.
in the list, find the program, right click and kill the process/process tree.
i would think that should work.
i like to have process explorer auto start, minimized to the task bar, showing cpu usage and RAM usage.
autoruns is another useful program, well they all are, but very specific needs.
    anyway, good luck with it.

Yes, it does indeed kill IDM, but as with doing it the unsophisticated way, IDM is immediately restored.

I can't find a way to edit my post, so will add the following information as a new post. IDM shows in Task Manger as a Background Process, but if END PROCESS is clicked, it is either ineffective, or restoration is immediate.

hmmm, well, if you end a program, and it starts up again on its own, that tells me there is another process that is monitoring IDM to make sure it is always running. you would need to identify this other process, end that one first, then you could kill IDM. the nice thing with systernals process monitor - is that it displays "all" running processes. i don't know what this IDM monitoring process is called, you would have to figure that out somehow. i would use 'kill process tree' to test this. something else to try - another program in the systernals suite is called autoruns, it shows all programs that autostart with windows. pop up autoruns, and delete the IDM entry to stop it from starting up with windows.
for me, personally, any program that is this hard to kill, would leave a bad taste in my mouth, no matter how "useful" it claims to be, and i would find a different program that behaves itself. but if you like IDM and find it useful, than that's fine. good luck with it.

Autoruns shows 3 entries involving IDM - even with all of them unticked, IDM restores itself immediately.

'no matter how "useful" it claims to be' I have no idea what the claims are, but my experience is that it is THE BEST.

"i would use 'kill process tree' to test this" - I can't find that entry amongst the 160 in Sysinternals.

well, if you like IDM and find it useful, then it's all ok.
kill process tree is in the process explorer program.
when you right click a process, you should be given the option
[ amongst other ones ] to kill process or to kill process tree.
    good luck with it all.

It seems rather a complex procedure - but at this stage, I cannot even progress with it - there is NO kill option. KillIDM.JPG

well, not sure what else to say, i am mainly an apple person who gets to supply support for my large family who all use windows computers.
the one thing that i make sure their computers have is the process explorer program, procexp64(dot)exe
that way, i can view and see what processes are running on their computers, and it aids in troubleshooting.
some one else, who knows much more than i do about windows, would have to chime in.
the other thing i have learned from my family, is that different people like and use different programs, and as long as a program does not cause problems, does not slow down a computer's responsiveness, and plays nicely with the other installed programs, then all is good. if they're happy, then i'm happy.
    anyway, good luck with it.

Win +R (run) services.msc for a process that keeps that program running.

When you open Services scroll down the list to see if Internet Download Manager is listed under Name.
Click on it and either set it to Disabled or Manual. (Startup Type)

Here is a small snip of what my Services looks like
