How to rename long name in Win 8.1

I am running Win 8.1. In the stuff I have copied over from my old XP computer there are several files with extremely long names. Win 8.1 will not let me copy them, delete them, rename them, etc. It gives the error message that the name is too long to process.

How can I rename them. I highlight one, right click, but I do not get the "normal" set of options including delete or rename. Simply to open, etc.

What should I do?

If the name is over 31 characters in length, you'll run into that. It's surprising XP allowed names that long. Can you rename them in XP then copy them over to 8.1

 

I am afraid not. The XP computer is long gone. I have several dozen of these files. Is there any kind of a hex patch I might try?

So, for my example, I've created a file called: blahblahblahblahblahbalhbalhiasasdffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff.txt

This file is in my c:\test folder.

So, to rename this long file, I'll just click start, then run, then type in CMD and press enter.

I'll type in cd\test (press enter).
type in: dir /x

Note 1b with the boxed item. You will want that info.

So, simply run:

ren BLAHBL~1.txt whatever.txt
dir
done (not a command) Note 2nd attachment.

If there are dozens of files, to rename, I'm sure the German guy can help out.
