    Hello. I have a question.

How does one send a text message or e-mail *FROM* a Verizon cell phone or smartphone *TO* a PC's e-mail server (such as G-Mail or Hotmail)? I have seen many online articles and forums indicate the reverse; that is, *FROM* a PC e-mail client or online webmail *TO* a Verizon cell phone. (...and the Verizon cell phone or smartphone user *REPLIES BACK* TO the PC user; but Verizon cell phone or smartphone can NOT initiate a text message or e-mail ON THEIR OWN TO the PC.)

Please reply with solutions or even if possible a stepped answer (1., 2., 3., etc.). A weblink that demonstrates the steps is okay too, but please be careful not to include the inverse or reverse I just mentioned -- that is all I could find.

Also in your response please let me know if some sort of cell phone or smartphone Internet service is required for text messages or e-mails to send and receive too beyond the normal voice service cell phones or smartphones provide.

    Thank you!

I think this might be what your asking:

    Sprint phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com

    Verizon phonenumber@vtext.com

    T-Mobile phonenumber@tmomail.net

    AT&T phonenumber@txt.att.net

Verizon was blocking hotmail and gmail for a bit--not sure if they have
changed the way they do business. Someone else might be able to address that!

It's very possible to do as I have sent many emails from my smartphone.

It's a little difficult to give you directions without knowing what kind of phone you have as each phone has different configurations. Let me know the make and model.

You will also need a phone that is capable of being set up for email and you will need a data plan (cell phone providers usually require that you to purchase a data plan/mobile internet/whatever they want to call it, regardless of if you want it or plan on using it, just because you have a smartphone).

    Hello dyamond & jbinmn:

Hello. Nice to meet you both. I appreciate your comments.

dyamond, you make excellent points. After reading your comments, I did some more homework on your points. jbinmn: Thanks! You're addressing the other way around is what I was finding online. FROM the PC TO the cell phone/smartphone. Thanks anyways!

First of all I need to let you know that this mobile phone I make note of is not for me, but for my dad who is not tech savvy. He has used computers with online services, but he fears computers in that to own one of this own. He will not admit it openly, but tell me not to get too techy with him. We all know someone like this out there.

When one would look at his mobile device, you would be easily convinced at first glance that he has a cell phone with a QWERTY keyboard inside; and one would "assume" he can e-mail me. But he does not have a smartphone phone. Yes, most if not all advanced smartphones come with a data plan with their mobile phone service as NATURALLY REQUIRED by the Verizon service plans for their smartphones. However, this assumption that all cell phones ARE REQUIRED to have data plan is NOT true. He has the Verizon LG Octane - a 2010 mobile phone. He uses it for voice (talk) and texting service with other cell or smartphones. It does have some "built-in" applications and some that need Internet based. He tells me that he did not opt for Internet for this particular mobile device since he did not select it as part of his plan. Okay, so since I posted this, he told me this. Therefore that explains it -- NO INTERNET = NO E-MAILING *FROM* HIS mobile phone.

Therefore, he still can text... ...but ONLY to other mobile devices that have a phone number. He cannot e-mail text, but plain text -- there is a difference! I see he has restrictions in his "To:" field on what he can input. He cannot input characters such as the "@" symbol and letters to spell out a typical e-mail address. ...and again, understand that he DOES NEED to purchase a data plan for mobile Internet which he has not. Therefore, he cannot send an e-mail without a data plan for mobile Internet. So without a data plan, he is very limited and unable to e-mail to my PC with an exception I will share with you in a minute. Just text between most mobile devices that have phone numbers strictly. So again, he can text, but not e-mail. Yet, if I e-mail him FIRST, he had the ability to "REPLY BACK" to me e-mail since he has my e-mail information already part of his inbox messages.

Answer: No solution unless he opts for the mobile Internet service.

    Thanks for your help!!!

    Hello Montecarlo,

I have an LG but not an Octane..there is a key on the Qwerty keyboard
labeled "FN" that should let him change from letters to symbols--

Not sure about his 'plan" but I know I send emails
just as if I were sending a text, but instead of typing in the number
I type in the email address. Good Luck with this--my Dad never did
figure out his cell phone--it stayed nice in the case though! ;)

    Hello!

Your father must have gotten lucky and have been able to opt out before they made it mandatory. Unless Verizon is different, you now can not buy/activate/upgrade a smartphone without being required. I wanted to see if this was true so I found this link in my research.

Personally I think it's ridiculous that you have to pay for internet when you are pay so much already, (I was paying $30 a month plan but I realized I don't use it that much and was able to downgrade to $10 a month plan).

Another thing, is an email account already set up on his phone? I ask because you said he replies to your emails. It might just be the case that some settings got scrambled? I found this information during my search and maybe, just maybe he can send without a plan? or maybe they are charging him per mb? I know my company does that if you don't opt for a "plan". It's the same with text messaging, if you don't select a plan, they charge something like 40 cents a text.

I hope this makes sense. :-D

No, you have it wrong. The addresses that he gave were for the phones. The email addresses would be, well, whatever they are. So typing in a text message, on the phone, to blahblah@domain.com (or whatever) would work. On your Octane, the FN key will turn the "2" key to "@". Surely you can see that on the keyboard.

I don't have a smartphone...it's an old env3 in fact. I don't use internet on my phone. And I've been sending emails via text messages for years.

Yep this is how you do it. I just sent myself an email from my stock text message. I do this all the time when I need pictures or something sent to my email from text.
