How to set IE7 nav bar to search

Discussion in 'Software' started by christopherjellybean, Oct 5, 2008.

  1. I used to be able to search from the nav bar in IE7 and not use the little seach box off to the side but now I can't anymore. I know I can go to
    tools-internet options-advanced tab and supposed to be able to set it there,I remember having 3 options but not sure what they were at the moment but now I have just 2-do not dislpay and just show results options. I'm not even sure what to search for so i figured I'd ask. I set the default as Google but it didn't do anything. I've ran AVG and spybot and Trend micro housecall and nothing came up except cookies. Any clue how to fix this??

    Under advanced options I have a section called "search from the address bar".
    If I set it to "just display the results in the main window" I can search from the address bar using the default search engine.

  3. Yeah,that's what's missing. I couldn't figure out what was there. What do I have to do to get that back?

    Have you ever had malware problems on this computer?
    The issue may be the result of malware or a malware removal tool messing with IE's default search hook and to fix it you may have to edit the registry.
    Before editing the registry it always a good idea to take a registry backup using ERUNT:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1267.html
    So do that first.

    Go to start->run and type "regedit" (without the quotes)
    In regedit, expand to this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks
    When you select "URLSearchHooks", you should have at least two values in the right pane like this:
    (Default)
    {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

    Is "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}" present?
    If it isnt, right-click in the right-hand pane, chose "new"->"String value" and give it the name "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}".
    Is the value present but have an underscore in front? If it has, right-click on it, chose "rename" and remove the underscore.

    You have to restart IE for the changes to come into effect.IE

  5. That did it! Finally I can search. It was missing like you said.And the only malware that I think may have done it was my wife downloaded that dang freezeware.com crap and came with some weather bug and toolbar.I deleted it and didn't even think about that till just now. Anyway it had the default entry like you said and this under it =
    {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}
    Thanks again for helping!!
