How to specify which codec to use in WMP10

hey,

I'm having a bit of an issue i can't seem to solve!! My WMP10 is using the wrong codec to playback my files. When i go file-properties it says under video codec that it is using Nero Video Decoder. However i do have the latest DIVX Codecs installed and this is what WMP should be using but for some unknown reason it just won't!! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck and i just can't see where i tell WMP to use the DIVX codec!

 

Ok problem solved i think!! I was playing around with Divx Configuration Utility and i noticed that there is a setting under Decoder, there is a box that says Support decoding of Generic MPEG-4 video, that box was NOT ticked so i just ticked and then PRESTO its working!!

HOWEVER, just for benifit of others with a future problem could someone still suggest how you would change the codec being used by WMP if you needed to.

 

I believe WMP uses whatever codecs are set in the system (as opposed to a program like VLC which uses its own codecs in the program files). The best way to avoid conflicts is to have only necessary codecs. A commonly made mistake is to install every codec pack under the sun, which creates more conflicts that it solves, in my experience.

On a fresh machine, the only codec pack I have ever needed is FFDshow. It is simply a pack of Divx, Xvid, WMV and a few other popular codecs.
