How to stop dialup connection popup

It is getting really annoying. Every time I use my pc the dial up connection popup starts and crashes the games I may be playing. The only time I want it to open is if I choose to start IE. I tried killing any update programs in msconfig but they just insert themselves again - one of them being the McAfee antivirus. Today I downloaded a registry cleaner and startup cleaning program to see if those work.

When I searched for this problem all I found was someone mentioned a log that a firewall keeps of programs trying to access the internet connection. Does windows firewall keep such a log? If so then what? Do I have to dig into the programs or registry to try and find the entries? Wouldn't they just recreate the entry when the program is run again?

It's not popups from adware or malware I am getting. It's when a program wants to check online for updates it tries to open an internet connection on it's own. I have it set to prompt me before connecting since I have a dial up and it's shared with my home phone line I don't want programs to just connect any time they feel like it.

So when the programs try to connect it brings up the internet connection box and prompts me to connect or work offline. When it comes up and I'm in the middle of a game it will make it crash.

What should I be looking for there?

That is selected but all that does is make sure the programs don't connect automaticaly. They still make the connection prompt appear and ask if I want to connect or work offline. That's what is popping up every hour or so when I am on the pc.

It's not worth arguing about. I'll just say that when I do connect to the internet I get zero popups and ads and both spybot and windows antispam say my pc is clean. Good enough as far as I'm concerned.

But TxTazDad was correct. When I got home I checked and it was not set to "never dial". Once that was done I didn't get any interuptions asking me to connect to the internet while balancing my checkbook or playing oblivion. Of course just opening IE it doesn't connect on it's own so I had to put a shortcut on the desktop to the ISP connection to use but the extra step is well worth not getting interupted when on the pc.
