How useful are online scanners?

Should they be used primarily if you think you already might be infected,
    or are regular scans advisable?

Any one of these stand out:

    Windows Live safety scanner
    Kaspersky
    Trendmicro
    BitDefender
    ESET.

Online scans can be very useful, depending on the issues. We use eSets online scan when we suspect a ramnit infection. But we recommend that you use MBAM and SAS on a regular basis.

Thanks. I'll scan with those two (MBAM and SAS) and leave the others alone for now.

Also, what do you think of scanning occasionally with Kaspersky's TDSS Killer or their Virus Removal Tool?

    Very helpful. Thanks again.

TDSSJiller will find MBR infections. These are generally associated with internet redirects. So unless you are being redirected, there should be no need to run it. Plus, there are other causes for redirects that do not involve an MBR infection.

Your best bet is to regularly scan with MBAM and SAS and be sure to keep them updated. ;)
