    The fine for the party was $18,000.

    "The 16-year-old told local media he had no regrets about the party because he believed invited guests had no role in the ruckus. Asked if he would do it again, the youth said he would do it again this weekend — if his parents were not due home from a vacation this week."

    Actually, according to the local news reports around here, the cost is approx. $40,000 (AUD). The kid doesn't give a toss, because he knows mom and dad have to pay for it. Time for mom and pop to kick junior out of the house, I think. rolleyes

    In another case, some stupid girl decided it would be a good idea to go onto Myspace and invite people to come around to her house and trash it. She was surprised when 300 people turned up to trash the house. rolleyes

    I like the kid actually he knows he screwed up obviously but he's REALLY smart he's playing the media like a banjo,every time the news tried to make him jump through hoops cry and apologize etc just for ratings he makes fools out of them.

    The fame he's got already will probably pay for the damage "The whole thing may have been a setup anyway" I say good luck to him.

    There was a poll going whether the kid should pay the fine or do community service to the sum of the fine....high majority was for kid to be made to pay fine. I agree with you, and further, I reckon his parents should devise some method to make that kid make up/pay for costs...that kid shouldn't be let off so easy...what a jerk of a kid, makes my hair stand on end whenever I've seen him on TV!

    He definitely needs to get a job (fast)!!!!

    Laws in the US restrict parents from kicking kids out until the age of 18 years old. The parents can be liable for child abandonment, ain't that something??

    In the US parents are also liable for any expenses their kids create, especially vandalism.

    Actually, down here there are legal requirements for under 18yrs if leaving home - eg: Department of Child Safety or the police must be satisfied under 18yr old not living at home is:

    • living in a safe place;
    • able to look after themselves (food, clothes, money);
    • not getting into trouble with the law; and
    • not in ‘physical or moral danger’.

    Plus, there are legal limitations - such as unable to lease apartment if under 18yrs.

    Re that "Corey" kid, if he has his parents' approval, plus if he were to take on those job offers (following his prank), he would be okay to leave home to some extent, but will still hit brick walls legally because he is still under age - so he would need to move in with someone 18yrs+. (But who would trust taking on such a liability as that jerk of a kid!)

    You know what pisses me off? The fact that the media plays right into that generation's 15 minutes of fame however they can get it.

    I'm sorry...the kid goes onto a news broadcast looking like that...do you think he's really sorry?? Thinking not.rolleyes

    The kids live to get onto youtube and stuff. I guarantee you all his 'mates' are giving him props.

    Are you allowed to press charges and send your kid to jail in Australia? I'm thinking I'd be tempted as his parent.

    I would also be liable for all sorts of "emotional and physical damage" to the kid after the party.

    Thats what gets my goat the media have put him on air so we can get annoyed at how arrogant and nasty he is and how we and our kids are so much better he knows that,I've heard him talk on radio shows and he's just a normal kid who wouldn't let the media get better of him.

    Parents of a child under the age of 18 years is a guardian of the child, and the parents have joint responsibility for the child [Family Law Act]

    If a child is sued, the case is defended on the child's behalf by an adult (usually a parent). A writ can also be served on a child by serving it on the child's parent or guardian. Consequently, given that kid’s age, there can be no civil litigation directed towards him by his parents.

    However, a child can sue for damages but the court action must be brought in the child's name, usually a parent or guardian. A claim can be lodged at any time before the child turns 21 years [Limitation of Actions Act].

    Such irony given that kid’s age.

    As said, 'Corey' says, he just considers all the media attention as being famous – so he’s happy being a supposed ‘legend’. The media are getting a lot of people to pay attention to any articles about him, so they're happy, and making more money.

    Maybe, the real losers on this are the community, and the neighbours who have to put up with the aggravation and damaged property. Plus the risk of copycat type so-called parties.

    Guess the days are gone when kids would read books, or play Cricket to occupy ourselves (or maybe, I was abnormal in that, lol).

    Unfortunately, the community and neighbours got the brunt of this kid's prank...and denials of not knowing the troublemakers still can't excuse the fact he instigated the problem.

    And frankly, I believe and know there still are lots of great kids out there who "...read books, or play Cricket...", they simply have a better sense of responsibility and know of alternative means for healthy and socially acceptable entertainment at a tender age.

    I still reckon his parents should devise a method of punishment while "Corey" lives at home, simple things like getting the kid to "earn his keep" by being given household chores if he wants pocket money.;) Or even removing "toys" he treasures from his room as a term of punishment (eg TVs, games, etc) and grounding him from social activities.

    Pretty sad world when a spoilt brat is getting more publicity and 'fame' than most Prime Ministers and Presidents, i.mo.

    Sounds like his parents are reaping what they sowed. They are away on vacation having left a 16 yr old at home alone?

    Sounds like they are perhaps well off, without having instilled in their offspring the value of money. Granted, the kid is an ***. and he is responsible for his actions - but I lay 80% of the blame on his upbringing. He is a product of his surroundings. I can't imagine going off on vacation and leaving a 16 year old son (I've had two) at home . . . what's up with that? Granted, we don't have the whole story and I am thinking in abstract here.

    Think maybe his carping for the willing press is a bid for attention his parents failed to give him?

    I dunno, I'm no psychologist. I do think the boy should be held responsible for the debt in some fashion.
