hello, my name is The Glad Rapper and I need some help with my comp. I recently purchased a brand new HP printer and during the install lastnight my comp flashed a quick message, rebooted and took me to the start windows normally,, etc screen. Tried to log on normally and it just kept rebooting so I reinstalled windows and it flashed the blue screen of death about the middle of the install period. Reinstalled again because I think I just tried to format over the old partition and everything was cool. Turned it on this morning and my hd starts running, I had forgotten to take the HP printer disc out so I took it out and put in Microsoft Office to do a quick install before work. Soon as it started running my home screen goes blank, no icons, nothing, just the background so I rebooted it and got the infamous "disk read error" again. Can someone help me please

(Hopefully this thread gets moved to the correct section)

What is the exact bsod error message?
Also maybe you can try booting into safe mode.

i know what you mean now, just said system didn't start normally, memory dump, blah blah and all that stuff (sorry, I'm not all that comp literate)

    bsod=blue screen of death

Since you mentioned that it flashed, you probably weren't able to catch the exact error message.

Disk read error sometimes tells of a failing drive. Does it occur when you have a disc in the cd/dvd player, or does it occur at any time (without anything in cd/dvd player)?

Maybe your cd/dvd player is dirty?

just occurd this morning after I put the microsoft office disk in, it rebooted and gave me that message, I've had problems before but the lady who built it put in a new motherboard, power supply, all that stuff about 2 months ago and it's been working fine sinice last night. could the hp disc I left in there lastnight be the problem?

Can you get to the safe mode menu and select "do not automatically reboot" (or something like that)?

is that in the bios? otherwise it's not on the same screen with the starting options/prompts

Are you getting into safe mode via f5 or f8? Try f8 on boot.
Also (forgot to ask) what OS are you using?

What you want to select is actually named "disable automatic restart on system failure" in the advanced safe mode menu.

f8 to boot I think, I'm running Windows XP Pro, it's a built computer with ABIT Motherboard, running on Raid or something like that, first boot sequence is HDD-0 but I have to change it to cdrom when I'm booting from disc. not on my comp right now, I'm at work but I get off in ten minutes

man I can't even get in there, it just keeps rebooting. I'mma try and re-install windows on my desktop again soon as I get home. I've got a laptop so I can try and fill you in on the progress

Ah ok I was wondering, almost sounded like you were at work while trying to fix your home pc.

Might be a bad/dirty cd player considering the problems you are having when a disc is trying to be accessed, know the brand of the player? (and/or approx. how old it is)

edit: if you feel like getting dirty I'd try completely removing the cd player and boot directly to the hard drive OS, just to isolate the error (if no error then cd player could very well be the cause, if error still occurs then could be hard drive). I suggest not to do that if you feel uncomfortable with opening/modifying internal equipment.

Also try to note any bsod errors (such as "irq_less_than_or_equals", filenames, 0x00000050, etc..).
