As im working through your guide, I might as well throw my problem out there... I've got some issues with all sound being distorted for some time now. In addition, random sounds would playback. Initially, I thought it may have been related to a AIM virus of some sort. So, I reinstalled AIM. This fixed the problem for weeks until last night. While viewing a video on youtube the computer was abruptly shut down by my dog stepping on the power button. (AIM was running also) Upon restarting, all audio is distorted and video playback is extremely choppy. Thankfully, the random sound clips have not resumed this time. Ive run virus scan, installed spybot, removed AIM, and checked all sound related settings. Still the problem persists. What is the proper course of action for diagnosing/fixing this problem?

Well, I spent most of the night running spybot, counterspy, ccleaner, Mcafee, removing suspicious programs/applications, and the sound was not working correctly this morning. I rebooted twice and left AIM uninstalled. Upon rebooting the 3rd time, making no changes, the sound suddenly started working properly and I can watch video smoothly now. It seems I am stuck with this on again off again problem, although i'm crossing my fingers this time.

Hi if you attach all the logs from the guide you followed of ours, we could rule out malware as the issue?

Ok, here are some of the logs...
Bitdefender is still running, and panda scan will be next. I ran counterspy last night in safe mode, but it shows no prevous scans in normal mode. Also, getting an error message with spybot about a missing file which wont allow it to run. However, after clicking ok spybot runs anyway.

Hey, just finished the bitdefender scan...Spybot has immunized and reported nothing...Cannot pull up counterspy log from last night in safe mode, I do remember it finding and fixing 2 problems last night...Will run the panda search if nessesary, however im fairly confidant there is no detectable malware currently on the pc...

I cant imagine what is causing this problem... I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Well you are in pretty good shape but this statement is not correct. However the things I will give to do below will not fix the problems you have been describing with sound! It is possible however that that massive resource hog McAfee could be causing it.

Since you have AOL Antispyware install, you should uninstall CounterSpy now since it will only slow your system down even more.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    Search Enhancer <--- malware
    Viewpoint Media Player

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

After uninstalling Seach Enhancer above, the some things below may not be found.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: ohb Class - {5ED7D3DE-6DBE-4516-8712-01B1B64B7057} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchTool\nsj45.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C09C9904-FD44-11D6-A711-00105AC8F168} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now reboot into safe mode and delete the below file (again the uninstall may have removed it already):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchTool\nsj45.dll

Also delete the below folder from some rogue tools you previously had installed:
    C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert
    C:\Program Files\SpywareRemover

    Now run Ccleaner
    Now reboot into normal mode.

Now attach a new HJT logs
Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Ok, I deleted the files you pointed out and created a new HJT log (see attached). Mcafee is a new install, and was not on the computer at the time of my inital problem with the sound. It may be something using up system resources, but I was unable to find it at the time. If there is no immediate fix and the problem resurfaces should I immediatly post logs then? If so, which program logs would you require? Thankyou for the help and support.

Well no you will find that McAfee is probably the biggest problem with resources.

In reality none of the logs would probably reveal anymore than what you just posted. As I said, most frequently problems of this nature are not malware related. However that does not mean that malware could not slow your PC down! It can do just that. It all depends on what infections and how many you get.

If the problem occurs again, you should look into what processes are consuming most of the CPU time on your PC and maybe that would help you determine the root cause.
