I have not had a chance to get on here other than approving members/deleting spammers in the last couple of months. Life has been crazy this summer.

We bought a new house and just settled on it yesterday (yay!). We listed ours and got a great offer a few days later only to have the jerks (insert expletive in place of jerks) back out 2 days later with cold feet. At least it was only 2 days.

We listed it again and got an offer a bit over 2 weeks ago. That is great but inspection crap/negotiation is taking way too long to get signed and finalized for my taste. We came to an agreement on everything, but they need a quote from a contractor, so still no signed contract and settlement is 3 weeks from now. OH...and they want us to do the repair work rather than just giving them the money. If they didn't want to settle so quickly, that would have been fine, but seriously??...get the thing signed so we can get started.

We are scheduled to move into the new house in 2 weeks. :)

SO...my life has been incredibly busy, incredibly stressful. and very exciting. A regular roller coaster.

    ANYWAY..

    How's everyone doing?

Well as some may know I also bought a new house and sold our old one we have raised two children and lived in for 27 years. Our settlement for the old place is on the 8th of August and the new place is on the 17th of August. We are already living in the new house but still moving stuff over. Man you sure accumulate some crap over 27 years and with a 6 bedroom home and a huge workshop there is plenty of places to tuck away those treasures. Our new place is only 4 bedroom and hasn't got the big workshop yet and we couldn't get planning permits until we are the property title holders so that won't be built for another month or two. This means a huge workshop that is four times the size of our new garage needs to be squeezed into a compact two car garage. Just the old computer graveyard has over 60 computers in various states of disrepair as many have been raided for parts and then there is the chest of drawers with the collection of old motherboards and graphics cards and all the old peripheral cards and RAM sticks and old power supplies and the huge pile of HDDs dating back to 1988....much of this will be scrapped as nobody was interested and there is just no space at the new house. Somewhere in the pile is an Apple Lisa which was the predecessor to the Apple Mac and there is also an original IBM 8088 XT with 8087 coprocessor and hi res hercules green screen and a 10Mb full height drive. Then there are all the tools and equipment from grinders to drill presses to welders to cut off saws to oxy acetylene kits to slide compound mitre saws and then the cupboard full of power tools and then there is the rack of steel tubing and steel plate for projects......then there are all the good bits from five Jaguar cars that were wrecked to build one concourse Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign.......and still it goes on.......

At the new place I have been building my new computer room and will post something when I have more time.

@LauraR I know exactly how you feel with the wrangling on the sale as our buyer tried to step out of the deal after placing a small deposit in an attempt to get a cheaper price only to find there was already another offer in place and he would lose the place unless he paid an extra $5000 plus an unconditional deposit of 10%...... so in our case luckily it worked out that we got extra money.
Hmmm....so you haven't moved yet.......we have so far had three huge furniture trucks of stuff and there is still one more truckload to go later this week. Then there is the big clean out of all the stuff not going to the new place and the rubbish removers are coming next week with a tip truck. I hope everything goes well for you.

Hey Laura, I was just thinking this week that it has been a while since some of the regulars have posted in the Lounge. Good to see you check-in. I was ready to do a roll call.:)

Joffa and Laura I totally undetstand your ups and downs and the amount of hard work moving involves. We helped a family member move last summer and it was a daunting task. It really is unreal how much "junk" a family can accumulate over a few short years.

Hope everything works out for you soon. ;)

Well, reasonably good for us. However, our daughter and son-in-law are having serious financial difficulties. Much of her financial support for her missionary work has dried up. Even her church stopped. Out of the blue, and for no discernible reason, her husbands church let him go. We have given them as much as we can afford...but it will not be enough. So this is preying on our minds.

First of all....Congrats!!! Very exciting you are already in the new house. Tell me about it on the junk. We got a large dumpster that contractors use for renovation projects and filled it up with all the accumulated crap from the last 18 years here.

We finally, as of 10 minutes ago, have a signed agreement after all the BS. It finally took my husband telling realtor to tell theirs that we would walk away if they didn't agree to what we came back with today....and come back within 2 hours. So home stretch. We settled this past Friday on the new house with no intention of moving in right away. We want to get some things done, get contractors out, etc before moving in. We settle on this house on August 21.

Hi kat! I know. I just haven't had any time to post with all the stuff going on (like head about to explode stuff). My photography has gone to the wayside this entire summer. I'm pretty sure I haven't take a photo with my camera since April. I haven't been on here much to post other than for some happy birthdays (Although I'm sure I missed some). The only thing that hasn't been affected is my golf. lol...that is one of the things keeping me sane through this insane process (other than my husband who is awesome with this stressful stuff).

Tim...I'm so sorry about your daughter and her husband. I can imagine how worrisome that is for you. I know it tears me apart inside when either of my kids are going through tough things. Do you think she'll wind up coming back to the states?

Tim that has to be hard to understand and deal with coming unexpected. It would be hard even with notice where they could make some preparations but out of the blue wow! Sorry this is happening to them. Where are your daughter and son-in-law at if you don't mind my asking? Hope they get some help or something changes for the better for them.

Laura glad things seem to moving forward for your home sale. It's good to have a hobby like golf you enjoy to keep you sane :p but I know you enjoyed photography also and took pretty pictures so hope you get back to it after the move happens.

I'm no longer able to work like I used to due to some physical issues, but I did get hired at the beginning of the year as one of two part-time office managers at my union local. To supplement, I've been doing more craft shows and selling more jewelry/rosaries. And I still cook, and still run my food blog, although I post pretty infrequently. The associated Facebook page gets 3 new recipes a week, but I can hardly find the time to write a blog post any more.

That's because I've become my mother's live-in caregiver since she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's almost 3 years ago. She's only in stage 5-6, but that seems to take up most of my mental and physical energy. But I've also managed to wrangle a personal life... been seeing a guy I've dated off and on since about 1993 for the last couple of years, and we're eventually planning to move somewhere together (he currently lives in Las Vegas, and I'm still in Michigan). Just got back from a vacation to Maine he surprised me with (literally... I didn't even find out I was flying to Boston until the night before, and he didn't tell me where we were going when we left the airport until it became obvious).

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother, Tibbs. I know Alzheimer's is devastating and it has to be incredibly hard to watch a loved one deteriorate like that. Does she have other help besides you? At least it sounds like you are able to get out and work part time and get away.

Any ideas on where you and your guy might want to be?

Sorry for the slow response but I have been absolutely flat out moving and then my wife was very sick for a week and a bit then I succumbed and have been bedridden for two days.
Yeah we are still amazed how much stuff we had and when stuff is stored neatly, it doesn't look like much until you pull it all out..........we are on the home straight now and the rubbish removers are coming on Monday to take everything that is not going to the new place.

Thanks Laura and congrats to you too and sounds like your husband manged the negotiations well and you got a good result. So will you be renting for a while before you move in? Best wishes for the 21st.....one of mine is the 8th and the new place is on the 17th so in three weeks for me, it should be done and dusted and time to start building the new workshop

I kind of know your pain......we are trying to arrange a permanent visa for my son's girlfriend (soon to be fiancee) so she can stay living in Australia after she gets her Masters Degree in Architecture. The stuff family and friends have had to do to fill in all the required government forms has been daunting as well as all the background checks that have been really invasive. I believe the USA is even more difficult than Australia in this respect so Tim, good luck dealing with the Immigration Department and I hope you have a good outcome and your son in law is allowed into the USA and can get a green card.:)

Lucky you wrangled a part time job and I hope it is ongoing or at least until you move to be with your BF.
Hmmmm.....Alzheimer's I know quite a lot about and it is a heart wrenching condition for any close relatives. We watched from the sidelines as the lady who used to live next door developed Alzheimer's at 58yo and by the time she turned 60yo she couldn't recognise her own four children or her 10 grand children. At 61yo she didn't know her husband of forty years and sadly she lived until she was 70yo basically not remembering anyone. It was really sad as they are a highly intelligent family and all have science or medical degrees of one sort or another and the husband was an industrial chemist who was the head of the Kodak Colour Division and she was a research biochemist. The family found it really difficult understanding the disease and how nothing could be done and even the eldest daughter, who is a highly regarded doctor, used some of her medical research contacts but still the disease went unchecked.
Wishing you all the best and after all the effort you put in it might end up a thankless task. Every day someone in the family would visit but the lady next door would tell anyone who would listen that her family never visits and they are dead to her...... sometimes she said this to her own children. At least your mum is still home as the lady next door had to be put in a secure care facility as she used to go wandering and not know where she was or how to get back home. It is a really sad situation :(
Mmmm....... Maine lobster yum ...you are a lucky girl ;)

Alzheimer's is horrible for everyone involved! I've seen the other side of that in the last couple years in my brother. ALS. His mind's still clear but his body is gone. In 2015 he ran for sheriff in the county he lives in and was well qualified physically. Had 30 years experience in law. He lost to a republican candidate. Shortly after his symptoms started. He was diagnosed later and sure enough as time goes by it just gets worse. His legs and arms started to loose function. Then his speech and breathing started to go downhill. After 3 years he's now deciding whether to go through with a tracheotomy and a feeding tube. The bad part is his mind is still clear. He's deciding on his care, dividing assets, deciding treatments as his mind is 100%. He loses about 6-8 % breathing every month. Down to 20-30% now.

I don't know which is worse. Losing your mind and not knowing, or loosing your body and being aware of it!

Alzheimer and ALS are both devastating and heart breaking diseases for both the person having the disease and the whole family. As are all terminal diseases like cancer. I have family and friends who have these diseases now and some who lost their battle. It leaves you feeling helpless as caregivers also.
Personally I think I would rather have Alzheimer and not know it but that would not alleviate the pain it causesed family. Each is terrible. I sympathize with any family going through this.

I appreciate the support and kind words! I'm the live-in, but two of my sisters live nearby who help some. The one handles her money, and the other one used to be in charge of hauling her to appointments and visiting and whatnot, but her husband was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and is currently in the hospital with pneumonia, so she's bowed out of everything for the foreseeable future. Mostly it's me, handling everything, but with no authority since I was told whoever ends up with power of attorney it won't be me. The goal is to keep her home as long as possible, especially since once she goes into a memory care facility I'll have nowhere to live.

The guy and I are still talking about it. Before we were a thing, he was thinking he'd retire to Tennessee somewhere, and that still may happen if I'm along. He's semi-retired now, but he won't leave there until he really retires. We discussed it on vacation and he doesn't want to move me unless he can fully support me so I don't have to work, either. I don't feel like I can go anywhere until Mom's gone, especially since I got back from vacation to find they nearly couldn't take care of her when all they did was alternate days visiting for 2-3 hours per day. Made me laugh... I'm here pretty much 24/7 except for the 10-20 hours I work a week (usually 10). But I'm going to Vegas in probably January for 11 days, so they'll have to step up again! :p She is 82, though, so it probably won't be more than 10 more years.

@Sgt. Tibbs sadly the blunt of care giving for an elderly parent usually falls one one child's shoulders. Have seen this happen over and over. As for Power of Attorney my sister and I had Co-Powder of Attorney, which worked out well for us. It meant both of us had to sign all checks and papers so we both knew exactly what was being done and where the money was going. No suprises! Hope you can work things out to all your best interest.

Laura moving and selling a nightmare, really its a PITA, so hope all sorted now?
Pete - Joffa my friend I love your new house, really want to move in with brexit and all, you know we are going to be foodless! but I know on hording as have a reletive that I really do not want to help clean house up.....
Kat we miss you always :)
TimW - Hope your daughter and hubby can get things sorted as not great place to be in limbo TBH VISAs can be a nightmare to sort out for folk from certain nations, just depends on gov at time to how hard easy it can be and guessing USA is not easy to get VISAs for some.
Tibbs, sorry to hear about your mom, Alzheimer's/Dementia is a nasty thing and have seen it up close and psersonal with some reletives, in part it and work and patients I see in clinic are avg 70yrs + I decided to do a NHS (UK health service) course on Alzheimer's/Dementia in the end did the gold standard version as I wanted to know more of signs etc, they have a Open Access version that anyone can look up and know more here https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/dementia/ Open Access videos and info are for public. I really do hope you and her can overcome the issues, but maybe this info may help address some pitfalls
Spocky - always good to hear from you and do let us know that your doing is it colledge, work and in wha area?

Laura - need pics of new house as I know you are so stylish and I will love your taste,

Me - well busy as hell, so much so I try my best to get on the forum as much as I can, its not enough as I'd want TBH, was in London last week for work not pleasure, although pleasure was nightime at Bonedaddies https://www.bonedaddies.com/restaurant/old-street/ and then https://drafthouse.co.uk/locations/old-street which had awseome PUNK IPA beer! oh the meeting was ok, most info was on AI, Big Data, Neural Networks and medicine, I think and some of my latest work has been in this area with a major Pharma and a US bio-tech company.

    Areas currently working on
Age Related Macular Degeneration (primary area and the clinic I run each week in screening suspected cases)
    Diabetes
    Vein Occlusions
    Celebral Malarial Retinophathy
    Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
Population studies (basically what does a sample size of 65K people have in vision issues)
Various university and pharma/bio projects on AI, Big data on automating diagnosis.

Life well bloody knackered! Me Im ok tired and CFS is not great but Im good, just with family going through some relevives health issues so helping the folks as much as I can.
Car well have the Abarth 595 still and epic car for city driving but weighing up a AMG GLC 63s coupe https://www.mercedes-amg.com/en/vehicles/glc/coupe/glc63s.html or Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio https://www.alfaromeo.co.uk/models/quadrifoglio/stelvio-quadrifoglio if Audi had a Q2 RS version it would be in the mix...... I dunno as in city small is king.

I do get on twitter a bit. work, politics, tech and bullshit but its not bad for asking companies questions, lately Virgin Rail as I was coming back from London, meeting finished early, on twitter the CS team sorted out change of train to earlier and reserved seats, cannot fault them. get me on twitter as mrdavidgp

Well, on a serious note the summer season has me quite busy and the family is a well as can be expected. Still fixing the occasional PC, but mostly just keeping up with the logistics of the moving and storage business along with family, home, and vehicle upkeep leaves me with a few hours of sleep, lol.

Mom has improved rather markedly and will be visiting in August, and she chose the week I'm to be away visiting the Finger Lakes so plenty of time for her to be with her nephew/grandson without distraction. I will return in time to spend a few days in her company.

BTW, any geeks near Geneva, NY drop me a PM for coffee, hot chocolate, cocktails, or dinner and a show the third week of August!

Thanks Kat, was in my first review panel meeting for nAMD on friday (Wet AMD or Age Related Macular Degeneration to us all) in 2 weeks and 1st thing one senior consulatnat surgeon said was, "is that all your holiday time taken up now, you cannot take fridays off" I need to ask for a payrise! (note only first 5 days of 37 days holiday time I have, so 32 left)

The studies I like as in Malaria we are helping in our small way the biochemists are the heros in this fight, in other eye conditions yes the large studies I work on for new treatments is brill, but also the smaller ideas we have "may" help, came up with 2 on friday to look into, only because I noticed a feature in a few images on friday morning that maybe a biomarker to disease progression, so we are going to look back 2-5yrs on this type of nAMD and see if we can see the feature.

Medicine and research is trial and error as well as ideas.

Boxes are, for the most part, all gone and things are all unpacked. I can't deal with clutter very well, so I was very motivated. That isn't to say everything is put away. My dining table is full of stuff that I need a place for as is my living room. All in all things are going pretty well. Thanks! :)

Busy is always good. Stressful, not so much. lol Things are looking a lot less stressful now though. All home sales are done and life is mostly back to normal (or our normal)

Are you headed to Pittsburgh, David? I went to school out there. It's really a great city and the people are all very nice. A lot less bustling and manic than you get in the New York City, Philadelphia, DC area (the Northeast).

@Daggerfall - you will make friends no doubt in comming weeks, just be approachable, friendly and while its akward at times, just say HI to folk you run into.

@LauraR no jusy like cities and whats in the area to view or of interest, been watching Jack n Ozzys road trip of late, so this just jumped int my head.
Glad move and moving in is going ok, lots of work in getting a new home and your nik naks in place as you want them.

Currently me on interview panel for a imagers job, interesting and Id want tougher questions but the easy ones we asked I think the candidates were not going occams razor replies but thinking that they were cryptic, so some didnt do as well as expected. Setting up a Workstation dual Xenon PC for AI/NeuralNet type work we are doing in office, so basically automated diagnostics, which is the way medicine is going, in getting a disease no disease outcome, if disease it will go to a human expert to review.

Setting up a new screening clinic on a rheumatiod arthritis drug and its affect on eyes in https://www.rcophth.ac.uk/wp-conten...pathy-Screening-Guideline-Recommendations.pdf the diagnostic work is easyish but the setup and patient pathways not so much, just need folk to say YES we can do that but as usual in UK NHS its all ohhh we have not done this, that wont work, to a point one dept wanted to send internal paper referral letters, when we have electronic systems that dont waste ££ in sending a paper letter and envelope.
