I have a HP with 2 hard drives. I had a power outage and used a genarater to power my house. Its a new genarater however has no special features. It worked to power this dell system Home pc and even used my note book on it. I then went to my man PC a HP with 2 hard drives. An XP that came with it and an Win 98 hd that a friend installed.

I pluged in the power strip to the exstention cord on ther genarater and turned it on. The Hp powred up and in one second the screen (monitoer) started to look shaky and it went black and the PC beeped once.

I then turned off the powerstrip and did not turn it back on untill power was restored. I continued to use the Dell with no problems running off the genarater.

Nevetheles, the power was restored and I pluged everything back up on th HP and it beeps once with no display on the moniter.

I get a single beep and thats it. Any help?
    Thank You

With the computer disconnected from the power open the case and find the small cmos battery "shaped like a coin." pull it out for about 10 secs then replace,a small screwdriver may be needed to push down a small clip.

This is a common procedure called a cmos reset.

Now try and boot up your computer.

If your comp still doesn't work you need to decipher the beep codes, first find out what bios chip your computer has by checking your manual, downloading your manual or looking it up at the HP site, then check the codes within these tables.

    Welcome to the forum.

EDIT To confirm 2 short beeps of equal length?

I opened both sides of the PC. I see what looks like a coin yet its wrapped around with a piece of metal and plastic and it appears plugged into the board is this what I'm looking for it at the bottom of PC?

The beep is 1 beep the a pause the another beep then a pause then another beep then a pause. It goes on and on. Sounds the same just one long beep after another..

Does the power button have a light on it? If so, what color is it? Yellow, green or red

Was the computer on when the power turned off? I would start with the power supply possibily being bad and work your way to the mobo.

Personally, I think the power supply went bad from the electrical spike or the mobo might be bad because of the spike also. $.02

The PC was on when the power went out. The light is green on the power supply and the fan runs. Can the Power Supply be bad and still be green light and fan working? This would be a great cheap fix rather then mother board ouch.. Should I try and buy a new power supply? Nevertheless, It is green and fan works. Just one long beep after another. Also, I don't see a code in HP for a repetitive single long beep.
    Thanks

    The link reads
Long continuous beep tone Memory failure
Steady, long beeps Power supply bad

    My beep goes...
Beeeepp pause Beeeepp pause Beeeepp etc..
    Would that be....
    Long continuous ?
    or
    steady long?

I replaced the Power suply with a new (out of box) IMICRO power suply. No more beeps however, it powers on for 30-45 sec then powers off. My thoughts are mabe even know the replacement power suply is new (out of box) it could be defect. It did have a dent in the side of it.. Nevertheless, This is what I've done. I dont have another PC to swap with. This is were I'm at.. Any sugjestions?
    Thanks

Pull the power supply out of the computer and stick it on a bench,on the main motherboard connector get a paper clip and stick one end in the connector with a grey wire and one end of the paper clip in any connector with a black wire, leave it there and see if the PSU stays on for more than 45 secs,if you have electrical test meter test all the voltages.

    http://www.smpspowersupply.com/connector_atx_pinout.GIF

If it does pull everything out of the computer, including all add in cards and monitor, leave the CPU and one stick of memory "one that you know works if you can." then see if it powers up for more than 45 secs.

Then replace each component "video card first." then monitor, ect, ect.

Your power supply is too cheap, its the most crucial part of the comp "in a how much damage can one duff component do sense",your risking all your components on $5,but that's up to you.

Ok... As I asumed the power supply was cheap as all the other power supply's weighed 1.5 pounds this one weighed 3 oz I picked this one as it was pretty. We live and learn.

I followed your instructions and pulled the power suopply, jumped the gray wire on the mb harnest on the power supply to every black wire on the same harnest. I could not get the fan/power supply to start at all. I asume this means the power supply is officialy NO GOOD.

At this time since (what I asume) is now a bad power supply must be replaced before I can continue anything. I will get a brand new power supply, install it and post the results. Is this what I should do now?
    Thanks

I would even if it powered up,a used $5 power supply with a dent in the side is asking for trouble.

EDIT get one from a large retail store somewhere impersonal that you'd have no trouble returning it ,spend at least $30,if it isn't the power supply get your money back, that's what I do.

Anything over 300 watts would be plenty for a computer running windows 98, assuming it is as old as it sounds. Pay the extra price and get a higher quality power supply, very easy to get a junker in that watt range.

Finaly, FedEx delivered my new Coolmag 450W duel fan power suply. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

It even runs TWICE as fast since I basicly took every part out and cleaned with a toothbrush. The heat sicks were nasty!

Nevertheless, thanks to all who pushed me to get a new upgraded fan and the ones who replyed to my post. Great outcome!
    Thanks

In future I would recommend the use of a paintbrush on all circuit boards, as a toothbrush may, not will butt may, strip off protective layers and damage the boards.

A toothbrush should be OK on a heatsink though, as long as you do not clean the surface that will be in contact with the processor.
