Dear Major Geeks! Where bad software goes to die!! Now that I have that out of my system, I have a new question:

My hp all-in-one arrives with a wet-diaper of software, bundled so it don't stink until opened.

I would like to get my Acer tm 4500li laptop to run the printer - by hp basic drivers installed (already! which i got from you gyz!). The hardware wiz is finding, but it won't accept the
hp#- sp30714 (dot) exe , which installed, as stated. How do I get them to meet? Your software lounge (nothing would surprise me)

always answered, always helped, always grateful,

    smiley

    Hi

What Windows version are you using (plus service pack if applicable)?
What HP Printer Model is it?

What error messages are you getting that Windows is not communicating with the printer, more info the better, even if you do a step by step of what you are trying to a screenshot of any errors or info that maybe helpful.

You shoud with the All in One software from HP be able to do a custom install and then just choose the basic drivers and leave the addon apps from HP out, this is the way I install my HP drivers, maybe good to uninstall the drivers you have and get the full drivers for your model printer and do a custom install.

Dear Halo, I'd say hello halo, but nobody might know the difference. Appreciate the response, as always @ majorgeeks! I have xp "pro" (the oldest pro, I wouldn't be surprised) and service pk 3.

Windows recognises the printer exactly (@ hardware task icon).

the hp software does not allow for a custom installation. I have installed what your website offers as the basic hp printer driver, as noted previously.

I'd like these twains to meet.

In mycomputer/manage/computermanagement(local)/device manager- I get 3(ea) "?" appear, (no printer setting) listed as "other devices"
    ? HPPSC 1400 series
    ? PSC 1400 series
    ? PSC Printer

-and that's what it looks like.

Is there anything else I can tell? Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi

If you have ? marks in device manager and they are possibly green in colour? then you have an uncompatible driver installed, need to uninstall and say install one from HERE, need to choose your exact model as there are a few varients. Most of the downloads list a basic driver as well as the full pack.

Dear Halo, Many thanks for your assistance. The "?"s are yellow. Also, I checked out the hp download page you offered, but the download function doesn't work. I can download very well (Arora) generally. I've removed all the hp software, run wiseregistrycleaner and rebooted. I just downloaded a couple of pictures from a news site (way off base - license plates! good one!) just to be sure. As stated, I've installed the hp basic printer driver...thanks again

    Hi

As these are yellow ? in Device Manager in the "other devices" list heading, then the driver you have installed is not correct, where did you download it from if you cannot download from HP? (HP site is working for me well, and also what is Arora?)

If you can get me the exact model number of the Printer, I will do a test download of the drivers and get a more direct link, if HPs pages are not working well for you?

When you are installing the drivers, do make sure you are in the Admin account, could also disable your Antivirus as they can interfear with application installs, and do not connect the USB cable until the installer asks for it to be plugged in (seems to be a trait of HP drivers).

As I did a check on the sp30714 (dot) exe file you mentioned you downloaded and its for a Media Card Reader for HP laptops!

    Dear halo,

Thank you for your response. Arora is the browser.

Hp's website pretends to download, I click everything I want, but nothing actually arrives. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hp hardware, but their software issues seem consistent and obdurant (from an casual/average 10/yr. user perspective). It is ridiculous that folks should upgrade their computers to support redundant software. I decided when I started this thread to get through this once and for all, since I don't use any hp features (windows is actually better! go know!) I resent the memory (800mg & rising), and friends of mine actually lose major functionality on their laptops due to the updater, et al.

The basic printer driver I installed comes from Majorgeeks. If it's not a printer driver, it's the first time I've ever encountered such from you folks. I only use majorgeeks for downloading programs. I carefully (as I know how) monitor all internet activity & processor speed. I don't mind uninstalling the driver I installed.
(note: I seached the driver (finally!) and you're right about it, of course)

My printer is an Hp psc all-in-one 1401.

Thank you again for your time and patience.

Dear halo, Thanks a lot. I've got the download from hp. The hang-up was Arora, a browser I was trying. I also checked the basic driver download description Where I got the other, and while it isn't real clear, the TI software is cooperative and stable and uninstalls gracefully, which is always nice. It was your question about Arora that got me thinking, and chkdsk found two corrupt files. I'm back using Opera.

Thank you very much, as always! I'll be back if I have any problems but everything appears to be on the up & up! Peace!
