The person that had the computer that I bought it from had everything redirecting to a f drive the drive did not have enough memory I tried just a regular download of windows embedded and it says NTLDR is missing..
I can get on the computer if I use ophcrack and slitz I think thats the name of it other then using those \i get a blank screen.

I thought if I could install any type of windows some how I might be able to bring the comp back to factory..

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Thank you:)

    Hi,

I'm still confused on what a thin client is exactly. My understanding is that it is a very limited machine that is used for businesses. It is used in places like doctor's offices where they would want a computer in 20 rooms all in a small space. Instead of getting 20 PCs and trying to keep them in synch they buy 20 thins that act like powerful monitors but they all communicate with one real computer/server that contains all the information. Windows embedded is a basic form of Windows that is just to get the thin client running the desktop environment. The point being that I'm not sure what type of hard drive you have or if normal Windows can function on that machine.

Now, as far as the current problem and error.
I want to make sure that you understand the booting from USB process. (If you are getting the "This system does not have license" I think you have it correct.)

You download this older version of the embedded system to a working computer.
    You connect your USB stick.
Go to My Computer and get the drive letter of the USB stick.
    Run the downloaded SP3914.exe
Click Next then Accept the Agreement.
    Click USB Format
Update USB -- you select the drive letter of your USB stick.
It writes the installation files to the USB.
Then you boot from the USB on the Thin Client. (Insert USB and then turn on the Thin Client)

Can you tell me exactly what you get on screen with this version of the WINXPe. Do you have to type anything before the restore or make choices? This version has slightly lower requirements that match your installed RAM and Flash memory according to your system specs post earlier. It is still licensed by HP for your model number.

I tried the link that you gave me and that would not work either
when I try and load in safe mode I get the error NTLDR is missing upon googling I saw that if I can find windows 98 embedded that may work and then the link you gave me will work

any idea if this will work I am now looking for a windows 98 embedded to see if I can use that I will try anything at this point. I hate to throw the comp out it is so compact

Thank you and have a fantastic day

    Hi,

yes I did all of what you said including the format to the usb and I get to the point where it says about the license when I reboot the laptop with the USB stick

I can get into F 12 for A network service boot.
I wonder if there is some setting in there that I could change that
    could help

    Thank you

Can you tell me exactly the process of installing from my link? (I can't run it other than getting a message about only for HP machines when booting from the USB)

So you boot from the USB and what do you see?

it says it will reformat the comp and starts like the progam should

asks me if I want to continue I say Y
then its asks me if I am sure I want to and I say Y

tells me not to turn the system power off and says it is validating the image
    and then it says

***ERROR*** The system does not have license for the image OS! then if I click enter
    it shows
C:\> and then it won't go any further

at one point a tried a diff xp embedded from hp that one started the install went all the way to the hp desktop and then said the system did not have the license for the OS!

thats as far as I got

Thank you so much for all your help

I'm really at a loss here.

One thing I'm wondering is which version got you to the desktop before the error?
I noticed that there are two images available on the page for your model. The one from 2006 has two systems that it applies to T5710 and T5720. Most of the other versions say they apply to T5730 and T5720.

Perhaps the validation will be different in the oldest image. You might give it a go. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...EnvOID=1058&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=3

The other thought is when you get the C: prompt after a failure if you type in dir and hit enter do you get a list of files?

Lastly, if you hit F10 at bootup and get the Startup/Bios screen under System Information which version of BIOS do you have? I don't think a BIOS update is applicable but I would like to know your version.

I could not get the link to do a usb format. I could get it to make an iso image that did not work either

When I try and boot up I get a HP Invent page :0)...
Is that a different kind of operating system that they may have added to the system

I never got as far the c:
it says the NTDLR is missing and to click ctr alt delete to reboot.

I am truly at a loss to this system I have reformatted other computers no problem at all
    \
    I truly appreciate allyour help

    Thank you

Here's one last old one with the T5710-20 model numbers. It has the USB format tool. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...EnvOID=1058&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=0

Yes, this is not a normal computer from what I can tell. That is the problem trying to figure out what can be installed. I just don't see too many people on the web having a problem with your exact model and the license error. I wish we knew where the license information was supposed to be stored. Do check F10 and see if you can find your version of BIOS.

or can I make either of those discs into a usb format .
My windows xp pro is on a hp disc that came with an older hp computer we owned

    just a thought

I knows there a link around here somewhere for putting a Windows install on USB. I'll take a look around. I'm unsure if the hardware will accept a normal XP installation.

You have the original version of BIOS. I'll look into figuring out how to flash your BIOS. I don't know that updating will fix change the error but it might be worth a try.

You could try WinToFlash with your XP CD to see if you get through an install.

    Hi Carolyn,
is there anyway that you could pull the HDD and hook it up to another machine so that you can totally wipe it?? Ccleaner has an inbuilt tool that will wipe the drive, just the one pass would clear anything left on there including any recovery partition as that may be a cause of the lisense issue.
Also I was wondering rather than a BIOS flash, maybe just a BIOS reset using the jumper settings, I will have a read up and see if I can come up with a run through with pic's for you.

Typically, most, including this one, does NOT have a hard drive. It is typically flash based.

Also, a normal XP cd won't install, this machine requires xp embedded to run properly. I'm just at a loss why the usb flash drive install doesn't run properly.

We have about 10 HP thin clients we use in lab/training situations that work fine. I just download from the HP site, install the update on the USB device. Put the USB device in the thin client, turn on the thin client. The thin client auto boots to the usb flash drive.

By any chance do you know of a work around for the unsupported lisense issue do you??? I would really like to try and get this fixed for Carolyn ;), what about running it off an external drive with the XP E OS on that??. As you use these "thin clients" in a working enviroment would it be possible for you to maybe try different solutions as to how we could get this to work for her?? all input will be gratefully recieved

    Thanks ;)

Here is a link that might help. It works on most older BIOS. If the towers passwords are stored in EEPROM You should have a reset jumper.
Be careful using this tool, otherwise you might need to re-flash the BIOS.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd I use this tool in a DOS startup disk.

    Hi onegoodman and hmmegam,
The password issue has now been remedied and the issue is now that she can not install the OS (XP Embeded) due to an unsupported license.

    Carolyn,
Have you contacted HP again regarding this license issue,no doubt they will be wanting you to send it to a repair centre so that they can charge you the earth for a fix.
