    hi people
i would appreciate it if somebody could help me try to work this one out
i have a hp dv2036ea which wont start up 99% of the time
its going right now but it took me about 30 attempts pressing the power button to get it running
when i press the power button, the blue lights come on, the mousepad lights illuminate and the power lights illuminate
    the screen stays dead,
the usb optical mouse doesnt light up
the fan runs, the dvd drive makes a little noise
every now and then i will press the power button and it will start up fine
maybe once every 30 attempts it will start
the laptop has just been reformatted because i thought i had a driver fault which i couldnt figure out
i restarted and pressed (f11) and used the original backup file
    the history of the laptop
ive always had a few software probs, windows media player 11 wouldnt work and microsoft office 2007 was having problems
both of these have been mentioned on here before but to no avail.
i went back to wmp10 and deleted office in the hope that was causing the non start problem
recently ive had wireless card dropping the signal
    and not finding the router
if i plug it in it will be fine
reformatting the laptop didnt sort this problem as its happened once since the reformat
the laptop is now clear of any software faults as far as im aware
its a fresh install, the only things ive added are windows updates, windows live messenger, ccleaner
please help, im going away next week and really need the laptop for my trip
    thanx carl
p.s. there is no blue screen error

Have you done the BIOS updates from HP yet? I see there is one regarding a fan issue\stability problem. This is a good bet. Otherwise, I would like to see you call HP because I am suspecting a hardware issue here. Everything you have done would have solved a software problem already and diagnosing laptop hardware, that can not be removed and replaced, can be difficult to do.

i did a recent bios update a few months back, the problem startsed shortly after than, dont think it due to the update tho :)
since ive had the thing, ive always had problems with hot fan, permanently on full speed
    it burns my lap :(
makes it impossible to use except when its placed on a desk, sort of defeats the object lol
its well out of warranty, ive contacted hp a few times about it and to be honest, their customer support is less than great
4 days reply time and repeated messages
was it a known fault with the fans?
do you have any links which i can check on the fan issue, i think it may be the fault
i have noticed that when the laptop doesnt start, the fan doesnt come on either

I wish, aside from trying new memory, unliely, you have a hardware issue meaning entire motherboard replacement. One reason I hate laptops.

I have the same issue. I have found a certain sequence of steps that will boot up almost every time.

    1) Turn on computer with AC charger plugged in
    2) If it does not boot up, unplug the AC unit, then power down the computer by holding the power button.
    3) Plug in AC unit when the comp is off. My comp tends to turn on immediately without pushing the power button.
    4) Turn comp off again with the AC unit still plugged in.
    5) Turn comp on again using power button, and the comp should actually boot up.

For the most part, this works everytime. I've heard several theories about static needing to be discharged, but the quesiton is why it continuously builds. A friend had similar but not exact symptoms and he replaced a voltage regulator and it fixed the problem, which I have yet to do but that is my next step. It makes sense that it is a power issue and he said that the regulator was only $25. Hope this helps.
