    hey all

just want to say this looks like a great community.

i have a big problem. just got a hp dv6746ca and formatted it to put on xp pro. i have that on there now and the drivers are causing me some serious pain. i tried the little program that you guys have on the site "Driver Genius Professional Edition 2007". It can't really have cause one of the drivers i need are the wireless and wired drivers for the card. see there isn't much information on the actual components in the computer.

so i need help finding these drivers. is there a way i can locate the drivers i need without a internet connection. like a program i can use that tells me what drivers i need, and then download them from another computer and put the on a jumpdrive and then put them on my new comp and install them.

here is a list of the drivers that i am unable to find:
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    Base System Device
    Base System Device
    Base System Device
    Coprocessor
    Ethernet Controller
    HP Integrated Module
Modem Device on High Definition audio Bus
    N/A
    Network Controller
    SM Bus Controller

Any help would be greatly appreciate and if you need any other information just ask and i will provide it to the best of my ability.

    Thanks in advance

    -Colin

Start with setting a system restore point.
Then take a look at this thread at the HP Business forums.
    https://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1197538

If those drivers don't sound right to you, post back here with a report from Everest.
Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "System Summary only", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

Yup.... I used this exact same forum to get the drivers for a similar model HP that had dumped Vista for XP. The drivers work. Be sure to install the MS UAA driver BEFORE installing the modem and sound drivers. Additionally, the modem and sound drivers MUST be installed thru the device manager. Running the setup files will NOT work and will error out. When installing thru the Device Manager, disregard the 'error' message stating that Windows can't guarantee compatibility... go ahead and install it anyway- it will work. I used the Atheros wireless driver from www.atheros.cz and it worked like a charm...

    hey guys:
    thanks for the speedy reply
i have seen those posts on the hp forum already and tried them. but the order of the driver installation is confusing to me. i have tried many packages and i am wondering is that may fool anything up by installing the wrong drivers. for instance do i need to format now or can i just install these drivers over again and it will work?

anyways....i did the everest report you wanted. let me know what you think.
    thanks again

Most drivers you can install over, but you can always uninstall the old in Device Manager before installing the new. (Don't uninstall the chipset drivers)
First, install your chipset drivers: If offered, choose the option to install ONLY the drivers.
This was in the hints for installing nVidia drivers.
"Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly."

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_630a_winxp2k_14.10.html
^ ^ Installing the chipset should take care of these ^ ^

After installing them, check to see what drivers you still need.

You will certainly need the audio drivers, yet.

You will need the MS UAA installed first:
    Microsoft-UAA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio
This should be the audio driver.
    Conexant High Definition Audio Driver

If that doesn't install properly then follow these steps:
Download this file, unpack it into your folder of choice.
Go to Control Panel>Device Manager -> PCI Device -> Update Driver -> choose the folder where you extracted it then you have to find the .sys file from the UAA HD Add-on folder and other .sys from the Conexant driver folder and then just boot and it'll automatically activate it.

i am pretty sure i installed the chipset drivers. after i got those installed the network card worked. i got the wireless card working too.

i am getting those other drivers now.

this is the chipset drivers i installed:
    12.15_nforce_520_winxp32_english_whql.exe

but those base system device and integrated hp module are still there. i will keep you updated and thanks for the help man. i appreciate it.

alright. i got everything working but the audio, modem and i still have an unknown device. been doing some reading about having to modify the inf file in one of the driver folders. any ideas?

    Did you try this yet?

  10. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

    yeah
i tried that. what happens is that i go to the device manager and all that jazz. i navigate to the right folder and click next. it searchs for about half a second and then says driver isn't found. i am really running out options here eh?

  11. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

There's a few more things to try.
First, uninstall your Conexant driver through Add/Remove Programs, if it isn't there uninstall it in device Manager.
Go into Device Manager, under the System folder, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)

    KB888111
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer. To work around this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP3\KB888111
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.

Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html

Install the MS UAA, then your driver, then do a complete shut down and re-boot.

Edit: Don't worry if you can't do a step completely. Just follow through and do all you can.

  12. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

    i did that:
i removed the UAA and deleted that key folder in the registry
ran ccleaner for both files and registry and the dame thing happens with the install...this came up this time:
Driver Installation Failed: Could not find MEDIA device for this driver.

so i don't really know what else i can do here

I'm thinking we may not have the right Conexant driver. Let's try this again tomorrow. Let me search around some more and peg down the exact motherboard in your HP. They don't like to make it easy to find that info. (And Everest doesn't seem to want to report it either)

  14. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

The "Base System Device" is for the 5-in-1 card reader. The one driver will cover all 3 listings. Here's the driver:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...7-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3224055&os=228
As to the modem/audio issue.... as I posted earlier, you must install the UAA driver FIRST, reboot, then install the audio and modem thru the device manager by right clicking, selecting update driver, selecting have disk and point it to the folder where the driver is. You will get an error saying that the driver cannot be guaranteed to be compatible, install it anyway and everything will work.

  15. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

after i installed the uaa, is it supposed to give me a completed message. cause after i run it and after the install bar is done it just closes and doesn't say it has found anything or that. so what do you think?

  16. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I'm running into two dead ends. Searches for the Conexant HD driver for HP keeps taking me to the one I already found for you, no matter how I enter search terms for it. I can only find a HP part # for your motherboard which takes me no where. I am trying to find out who makes it so we can try their audio driver,
The only way to be certain, would be to open your case and look for the maker and ID # on your board.
In the HP Business link I gave you earlier, the audio drivers I keep being sent to, are the same exact ones that were mentioned there. The poster there didn't really say that he had resolved his sound issue.
It looks like you may have two choices, if we can't determine your motherboard ID.
    1) Buy a sound card
    2) reinstall Vista

This is what HP has to say:

  17. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

i got the modem installed there now
i have the sound and the unknown device left
i tried like you said about the uaa first, reboot, and then installing the other 2. does the modem need the uaa as well?

  18. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I haven't run across one needing the UAA before. dlb says to install it first, and he seems to have done this with a similar HP before.

I just remembered one last thing to try:
Goto Device Manager>System and look for: Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

If you DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
If you DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

Your audio device should now be recognized in Sounds and Audio Devices

  19. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

did that and i think some must have changed. when i restarted, it didn't ask me for drivers or anything like all the other times. but when i go to sound options. all i see there is bluetooth hands-free audio. i thought there was supposed to be another one there.

  20. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Yes, it should show HD audio or Conexant audio.
Look in the System part of Device Manager and see if The MS UAA Bus driver is listed there now. If it isn't, try installing it and your audio driver again.

  21. dlb

    Yes.
    From the HP web site.....
I know you're having problems, I did too when I did the same thing with a very similar model. All the drivers were EXACTLY the same as all the drivers I've seen mentioned here. I wish I could remember the exact model number of the laptop I worked on, but there's so many it's hard to keep track.... The owner of the PC I worked on is bringing me a 2nd identical laptop to 'downgrade' to XP from Vista because he was happy with the first one I did a couple weeks ago. I'll post any helpful info from that project if it applies here....

BTW- the laptop from a couple weeks ago also had an unknown device in the Device Manager when all was said and done. The PC was 100% functional, and it drove me nuts. Even though everything was running great, having that Unknown drove me crazy. I ran Unknown Devices and found the HPQ number for the device and found it was the quick launch driver. I located it, installed it, the unknown device disappeared. Try running Unkown Devices. When I did it, it returned an "unknown device" message but an HPQ number was included (I think it was 'HPQ' and it was something like 'HPQ0007'). I Googled that number and found out it was the quick launch buttons....

the uaa is in device manager
i tried the install of the drivers again and i am still getting:
Driver Installation Failed: Could not find MEDIA device for this driver.

thats happens with the audio driver....not the uaa one

  23. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

also. i just wanted to say thanks to the both of you for your help. i am not doubting that you mentioned the right drivers dlb. just that for some reason they aren't working on this laptop. we will keep trying thoughh and hopefully get the problem resolved. :)

It might be that the HP version of the UAA driver (sp33867) is slightly modified from the original MS UAA. Here is that driver:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...4-1&lc=en&cc=us&product=1842155&os=228&dlc=en
You may have to re-do these steps to get it to install.

  25. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

i will try that. also, there is another HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP3\KB888111WXPSP2

should i delete that one as well?

so tomorrow i will follow those steps for the sp33867 and let you know how it works out

  26. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Yes, just to make sure that the install goes good, or at least without interference.

  27. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

    i did what you said
    something different happened
i did it all and when i was installing the uaa, it went further into the installation. before it gave me nothing after the install, this time it actually went through more when installing. and asked me to restart. it didn't do that before. but i still ran into the same problem with the sound driver though.

  28. musksnipe

Try using the Add Hardware Wizard. When installing the Audio drivers through the Add Hardware Wizard, choose "Install from a list or specific location", then "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", and then the "Have Disk" button. Then point to the audio drivers on the CD.

  29. cdanderson04

    cdanderson04 Private E-2

i did that and got the modem installed again.

    this came up though:
There was a problem installing this hardware
    Conexant High Definition Audio
This device could not start. (Code 10)

    just an update:
i looked up the code 10 error and tried some of things they suggested.
as of right now all i have in the unknown devices section is the quick launch buttons

in audio controllers in device manager, the coexant audio was there but had a ! next to it. opened it up and it was still the code 10 error. might give hp a ring later on if there aren't anyomore suggestions.
    :)

I didn't read the above posts between this one and maybe the 4th one from the top, mainly because I'm not adding any input to the current issue. I am listing the HP service pack number for the drivers I used on a dv9000 series HP laptop (dv9715nr).
    Audio - SP34386
    Modem - SP33839
    UAA - SP32646
Media Reader (the three 'Base System Device' listings) - SP33020
    QuickLaunch Buttons - SP32280
The other drivers (video, chipset, wifi, etc) are not from the HP site, so I can't provide any concrete info on those....

  33. cdanderson04

    k. thanks
here are the ones i have tried ( i have a couple here):
    audio - sp35682 and sp34200 and sp33310
    modem - sp33742 and sp35335
uaa - sp33867 and the UAA HD Add-on

i am running out options here aren't i? haha.

I'm out of suggestions. I'm working with another HP with the same issue and he still has no sound after all the same fixes. It seems like HP has locked out back grades to XP.

Sorry found a link but it doesn't work.
    It was for
Conexant Smart Audio 221 driver. I will see if I can find it elsewhere.

  36. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

Not sure if they apply to you guys, but the drivers I listed above worked perfectly, the first time I tried them. I did the chipset first (ran setup.exe), then the video driver (installed thru the device manager), then I installed the UAA (setup.exe) and then then audio and the modem (both thru the device manager). Then the wifi thru the device manager, then the media reader and quick launch, both with the setup.exe files..... I've been following this with interest 'cuz it seems that MANY people are buying Vista laptops, and then deciding they don't like Vista and the install XP without really thinking about it. And it really can be a nightmare. I had one lady try to install XP three different times, and completely messed up each attempt, and when I finally got it working, there was NO drivers, anywhere (it was for a Toshiba originally marketed in Europe) for XP. I did end up getting a video driver to work, and the wifi, and XP installed the NIC, but that was it; no modem, no audio, none of the 'normal' Toshiba stuff. So I said :*** and went back to Vista....
