    Try Menu button.
It will show Favorites and on the right All Applications. Choose all applications.
    Then System Tools.
Then System Profiler + Benchmark on the right.
    Then scroll to Storage.
    See what is listed.
Probably just your CDROM drive is listed. Which means the HD is bad as you originally diagnosed way back when you say the burn mark.

I can't find any way to see the HD... I think it is fried... as we originally thought... it appears now what I need is that free HD and free boot cd from HP.

Anything else you think we need to do at this point?

Ask me if the above post doesn't work out as I said.

When done just insert your USB flash drive to see if it is recognized. I just want to check that the laptop's USB ports are working.

System tools won't open anything... but I scrolled down thru programs and found 'disk analyzer' and ran it and it only showed my flash drive

I've had a flash drive in the whole time and I've download pics to the desktop, set a desktop back ground, etc.

I don't have any music on a flash drive but if I did, I would play it to check the sound.

I just downloaded a wmv to the desktop and played it and it looked great and the sound is fantastic

To check sound just go to youtube and play a video.

System Tools should show Benchmark on the right hand menu.

I think you've done it my friend... I'm going to order the HD and cd and I think we've back in business... unless you want to try something else....

It looks like the motherboard is fine. The HD is bad.

Take the money and run! I would take HP's offer of a replacement HD and recovery CD. You should be fine installing the HD and reinstalling the OS. If there really is any mold it is not effecting the motherboard. Normal use should dry things out and you should be fine for some time.

I wouldn't worry about it. That may just be a quirk with Mint working with your computer. The computer can boot from CD and from what we have seen, says the motherboard is OK. Unless the connection between HD and motherboard is bad you should have no problem with a new HD and recovery CD.

Go with the deal from HP and see what happens. We will be here if you have any problems.

    ****
I'd like to know what kind of techs they have that say the HD is fine and the motherboard is bad when the exact opposite is true. Where can I get a job like that?

    Hey Sach...
I want to send you and everyone else who has contributed to my HP G62 fiasco a GREAT BIG THANK YOU.. :-D

I really cannot tell you how much I (and my grandkids) appreciate all the help I recieved here on MG from so many nice people.

I also want to report, with the exception of two updates which will not load, the laptop is sitting on the island in my daughters kitchen, repaired and fully functional.

BTW... I fully expect to see these final two updates: KB2425227 and KB2479678 installed soon as I believe either HP and or MS took my threat to heart. ;)

FTR... I told them I was a gun lover and a HP/Win 7 hater and I intended to take the puter into the desert, prop it against a dead cactus and film myself shooting it full of holes with my S & W Mod 29 44 Mag... and then posting it on Facebook and U-tube. :major

Whether my threat had anything to do with the results or not, I was contacted almost immediately by both companies for information, i.e. serial number, address, phone, etc. and within an hour I was able to download all but two of the dozens of updates recommended with just one click of the mouse.

Please don't burst my bubble, let me believe my threat worked. I spent dozens of hours :cry being rejected on every update attempt on both sites on dozens of recommended updates.

    Anyway...

Sounds like things are going well. I saw your other threads about the laptop and it looked like you were working through the process of getting it back up and running. Good job!

p.s. I'm glad you count us at MG as being helpful. I for one, would not like to to get on your bad side.:-D
