    HP Probook 6545b, latest BIOS,
    XP Pro w/sp3,
    USB mouse, USB printer

Powers up from power off state, NOT from hibernate or standby,
Usually once a week on Saturday between approximate 12am & 7AM,

Programs auto updates: set to NO updates,
    Wake on USB: OFF,
    BIOS power on: OFF,
    Wake on LAN; OFF,
    Scanned for Viruses.

When I first checked the BIOS, I found "Wake on USB" checked which I unchecked. I checked my programs to see if updates were turned off which is one of the first things I do when I install a program. This brings me to the question: If the system is powered off, even if a program is set for auto updates, the system can't boot up from a off state can it??

BTW, There are no HP diagnostic programs installed. This was a fresh non HP O/S install.

Also, the Laptop lid is closed. When I lift the lid and move the mouse, nothing happens. The screen stays dark. I have to hold the power button to shut it down. Any idea why it doesn't respond to the mouse movement??

Sure it can because you are telling us that is what is happening. I had a computer that turned itself on every night at 9pm. It had been in a doctor's office and was set some obscure place to update every night at 9pm.
I eventually plugged it into a power strip and turned the strip off so it couldn't turn on until I could find the setting and delete it.

As far as the mouse not waking the laptop off, your USB ports are set to turn off after a certain time period to save battery power. Look in Device Manager under the USB section and select NEVER turn off the USB ports.

I never said it was a "program" that is doing this! In fact, I said I checked my programs that they were set not to do this tough I can't see that is possible if the PC is off (NOT in hibernate or standby).

As far as the mouse waking the Laptop up, I turned that off purposely to eliminate the possibility that was the problem. The keyboard didn't wake the laptop up either when it was in this 'on' but some type of standby state.

My computers do not use hibernate nor standby. I turned the computer off. It was plugged into an outlet (that is hot) meaning the outlet is always on. The computer turned ON (from completely off) every night at 9pm. It was not a program doing this; it was a setting in the computer.
So what you assume is impossible is not.
Unplug it from the outlet on Saturday nights and turn off the wifi.

Sure looks like it is on some sort of schedule, otherwise it would happen randomly.

I was going to post about the BIOS Auto-On feature that is included in the most recent update and saw it mentioned in your thread at HP.

Did this problem start around the time of your BIOS update or before? Do you see the Auto on feature in BIOS? (I saw you say it isn't enabled but go ahead in to it (enable if necessary) and see what the default turn on time is, does it correspond to Saturday mornings?

Here is thread with a similar problem for a different model and it does appear to be BIOS related.

Enabling the wake function and setting a daytime hour may over-ride the default Saturday morning time. Disabling after enabling might also make some change.

I didn't come across any answers other than reverting back to the old BIOS. You could file an official Support Request if your laptop is still in warranty (which it may well be). They should still be supporting BIOS updates for a model that has only been out just over a year.

There are check boxes for each day in the week. Then there is a separate box with a start and end time (I believe).

    sach2;You mean the thread with this post;
Hummmm................ :-D Ironic time isn't it?? Thanks for that link. I didn't see that since it was in another sub forum.
I'm leaning towards this Bios version (F06). I'm going to wait until the next time this happens and then revert back to the F05 Bios.
