HP laptop touch-pad problem?

    Hi all... a question to which I 'think' I know the answer.
    My wifey plays lots of games on her laptop and the surface coating of the touchpad has become greatly worn.
    Now, when you put your finger on the touchpad and touch another part of the computer case, the pointer jumps all over the screen.
    I 'assume' I need to replace the touch pad?????
