    Hi,

I have a HP Laptop which is still under warranty. A few days ago the screen went blank, it looks like it's the backlight as it powers up normally and plays sounds and everything. With the HP technician coming to collect it in a few days, I just wanted to know whether I should back up my data or not. I don't think I need to as they only need to replace the backlight but if I do, how am I supposed to do it when I can't see anything?

Any help welcome, and thanks for a great site!!

    Hi,
Losing video is a huge problem, but much worse with a laptop. Your only hope I can think of (hoping the video card is not dead) is to boot into safe mode. Tap the f8 key while booting and select safe mode. If you can get to, and see, from safe mode, then you can perform any backups. Since you have video when it starts, I think you can do this as having video on the boot screen is a good sign the video card is not the problem.

Have you tried attaching to a standard monitor, just for the time being?

If it works, you can see to backup your data at least.
