I have a HP G60-235DX Notebook PC with Vista. I bought it 6 months ago and I never use it for the internet. Today it wouldn't start up, I get this message:

    "Windows Boot Manager"

"Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred."
...this is the message, sorry is so long. I hit enter to restart and try using the F8 or F12 keys and doesn't do anything. Only the F2 keys bring up a Start-up test.
    This are the results:

"100% of the system memory tested OK
3,113,988,096 bytes of system memory tested OK
    Memory test passed."

    "Primary Hard Disk self Test
    Quick test is executing
    00% complete:
#10008-Replace Hard Disk 1rent test item"
...this last sentence I got in red letters.

What can I do to fix this? Do I have to take it to Best Buy so they fix it?
I don't have the insurance they sell so I hope is not too expensive to put a new hard drive.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

    Hi ricky.

First of all make sure the HDD is seated properly, remove it and reseat it just to be sure.

Then run a proper HDD test....

    Download UBCD UBCD - http://majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Boot_CD_d4981.html

You have to burn the file as an ISO image file to a CD..... NOT a normal data CD!

Once you have that done put the disk in the drive and reboot, you may have to hit enter to continue..

Then go to.. >> Hard disk tools >> Diagnostic tools >> HDAT2 :)

Run that test and let me know what the results are.

    Q

NOTE: If you manage to get the computer to boot windows at all, run a chkdsk..

    Go to run and type
    say yes and restart.

Q thanks for your quick response.
I don't know much about computers, let me see if I get this right.
I need to open the laptop and make sure the hard disk is seated properly, right?
What does the HDD looks like?
Sorry for not knowing this things.

    Thanks.

Hi ricky, dont worry we all have to start somewhere :) also you dont have to open your lappy to do this.

There should be a little panel that comes off underneath or on the sides, possibly behind the battery (it may have one or two screws holding the little panel on) and then ther might be some sort of clip inside and the HDD should slide out one way or the other.

I cant find any info on your lappy for removing hdd but it is usually fairly simple :)

Once you have it out It should look something like these...

    Q

NOTE: Be carefull! Dont try to force anything too much that doesn't want to move! come back and ask if your not sure :)

Q that was very easy to do, thank you.
I re-seated the hdd and still nothing so I'm going to step 2.
By the way what's a Diagnostic log result: 0303

Also I tried downloading UBCD and I hit run and then it puts the icon on the desktop so I double click it and it ask me if I want to extract the file so I hit "yes" and it puts another icon on my desktop and when I try to open this one it says that I don't have a program to open it. I am doing something wrong?
I have downloaded other programs from Majorgeeks and I never seen this happen.

You need to burn That file that you got when you extracted..... to a CD...

    BUT!

You can't just burn it like a normal data disk, you have to burn it as an .ISO image file!!!

If you dont know how to burn an image file, download and install this program...
    http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=6206&file=15&evp=e99d8f709132a0659d1e0dc00ce5e28a

Once you have installed this program run it and you will see an option called "write image" select that, and from then on it is just like burning a normal disc.

Once you have the disc burned put it in your disk drive and restart your computer, you may have to press enter or something, just watch the screen :)

Then follow the instructions as above :)
