If anyone out there has this PC, I was wondering if I could get you to make me a CD from the Recovery CD/DVD Creator. I could pay for shipping and you time, I'd really appreciate it.

My friends HDD is severely corrupted and has possible physical damage and this includes the Recovery Partition. I’ve been running Spinrite for awhile and it’s looking real bad. He does not have the physical media to reinstall windows and HP no longer offers it so he’s out of luck. If anyone has any other ideas, let me know.

    Please Help.

    Thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: HP Pavilion a110.no Desktop PC e-mail support

    Dear Pete,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand that you have replaced the Hard drive of the HP Pavilion a110.no Desktop PC and wish to obtain the Recovery discs in order to set the computer to its factory settings.
I would like to inform you that the HP and Compaq Presario desktop PCs are shipped with two partitions on the hard drive (C: and D: ). The D: partition is called as Recovery Partition. This partition contains the image of preinstalled softwares, device drivers and the Operating System files. We can use this partition to reinstall preinstalled applications, device drivers or to reset computer to its factory settings in the event of system crash or if system is infected with Virus, etc.
In addition, to the Recovery Partition, system is also shipped with Recovery CD/DVD Creator software. Using this software, we can create the Recovery discs for the PC. Recovery discs also contains the image of preinstalled softwares, device drivers and the Operating System files. We can use the Recovery discs to reset computer to its factory settings, if the Recovery Partition gets corrupted or if you have removed the Recovery Partition. We can also use the Recovery discs to reset computer to its factory settings, if we change the hard drive.
As you have replaced the Hard drive, you need to perform System Recovery using Recovery discs in order to set computer to its factory settings. I am not sure whether you have created the Recovery discs or not. If you have not created the Recovery discs,
I have gone trough our database carefully in order to check the availability of the Recovery CDs for your computer model. I regret to inform you that, the Recovery CDs for your Compaq Presario Desktop PC are not available. So please accept my apologies in this regard. I even had some search on the web to check the avaiability of the Recovery CDs for your Compaq presario Desktop PC. However, I should inform you the reason for unavailability of the Recovery CDs. Please refer the following information and understand my limitation in helping you in this regard.
Hewlett-Packard is no longer able to supply Recovery CDs for some older
Compaq Presario products. We can only produce a limited number of discs,
according to the licensing considerations with Microsoft(R). Once this
supply is exhausted, no more copies of the Recovery CD are available.
Many of the 7000, 5000 and early 8000 series Compaq Presario Recovery CDs
may not be available for order.

However, I suggests you install the retail version of operating system as per your requirement. To get the retail version of operating system you can contact the Microsoft or any reseller in your region.
I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused in this regard and I hope you can understand my limitation in helping you. However, if you need any further assistance please get back to us and we will be happy to assist you at any time.

Have you tried to order the CDs using the Recovery Kit link on this page? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=470505&lang=en I was able to set up a order for the Recovery kit costing $15.80 plus $1.31 tax = $17.11 total. The recovery kit is titled "xp home sp2 53naheblu1 + supp 5 recovery kit".

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Following on from HPs reply, this suggests that HP have not fully understood your problem correctly and are very careless in their reply. It looks like bits of a stock reply or responding to someone else who has a Compaq Presario!rolleyes

    1. They first refer to your machine incorrectly as a Pavilion a110 and not a1110n.

    2. They note that you have replaced your hard drive but go on to say that you could recover from the D: Recovery Partition. Assuming that they understood that your original hard drive is damaged, how would this be have been even possible?

I presume you have tried hooking the damaged disk up as a slave on another PC and attempting to copy the D: partition? Even to the extent of using data recovery software, e.g., http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads38.html

    3. They also suggest (too late) that you could have used the "Recovery CD/DVD Creator software" to create a recovery disk. This is your original request to obtain a Recovery CD using this software from someone who has the same Pavilion a1110n using Windows XP.

    4. Then HP go on to say that you should use recovery disks to re-create the new hard drive BUT, here is the problem, HP finish mid-sentence ("If you have not created the Recovery discs,...") and start talking about recovery disks for a Compaq presario Desktop PC - totally irrelevant to your machine. This is not your machine and HP had probably searched their database for recovery of a Compaq Presario. The remaining text in the HP e-mail appears only applicable to Compaq Presario machines (specifically mentioning 5000, 7000 and 8000 series) and not HP Pavilion machines.
Maybe HP did follow the link above and searched their warehouse for "xp home sp2 53naheblu1 + supp 5 recovery kit" and didn't find anything but I doubt it.

    5. Finally HP say to go and buy an Operating System from Microsoft. There ae two problems with that: a) Microsoft are not selling retail version of Windows XP, only Windows Vista. b) Attempting to use Windows Vista may well require you to find equivalent software packages and install specific drivers, if such things exist.

Thanks so much for your help Maxwell! The recovery disks should get to my friend by 06/24.

HP isn't compensating my friend for their mess up 3 weeks ago. Had my friend listened to their advice, he'd be out $200 as they suggested his only option was to purchase the OS all over again from another vendor. No more HP computers for him, they have joined the ranks of Dell, meaning he'll never buy from them again either. I always just build my own so I've never had that problem.

nextweek, thanks for chiming in but that's what i was trying to avoid, that would have been his last resort, buying a new OS and installing it, installing drivers, etc... Theres no reason that shouldn't work. Although had that been the case, I think he would have just bought a new PC.

Thanks again to both of you for your replies.

Woot, saved someone $200. Well done! Hopefully you'll get the right disks.

You could see from HP's reply that they started to spout nonsense about Compaq Presarios and that's where their confusion set in.
