    Hey,

Everytime i switch on this laptop after a few minutes it powers down. It doesnt have a version of windows on at the moment, but while installing the computer just shuts down.

I have replaced the fan in this laptop and cleaned the inside of the laptop up. My query is what could be now causing this problem because I dont believe its heat related.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Greetings, Porkiepvfc.

Does the machine stay on while in BIOS?

Also, what Windows version are you trying to install?

Nope the fan speeds up as if it really is hot and then cuts off, its as if its over heating but ive cleaned everything and installed a new fan i really carnt see it is that, unfortuantly the bios doesnt have a temperature screen to see what the temperature is running at :(

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

One thing you might try real quick is re-seating the RAM module(s) - if there are multiple modules, try swapping slots, see if your symptoms change.

Can you get to the processor? If so, is there a heatsink on the processor? If there is, make sure it's clean.

Does BIOS recognize everything (processor, RAM, hard drive)?

The bios is pritty crap tbh and doesnt give you much information but it recognises the ram and processor, i tried the hard drive self test and it passed and its recognises there's a hard drive in the windows installation but it still jsut turns off.

Tried the idea with the ram and still the same. I installed the new fan and cleaned all the stuff earlier today. It still does the same as before the fan was replaced. I carnt think what may be causing this unless its the hard drive? Is it worth buying a new one or is it unlikely to be that?

    Cheers

    Hi,

This is fairly long discussion thread but several people had success with reapplying thermal compound to the CPU.

The other thing discussed is whether or not it does it running on AC with no battery in place.

I realize these are common troubleshooting tips but they may be worth exploring.

*I don't think the HD is involved. Didn't you say it shutdown after a while even on the BIOS screen?

The other lesser thought is if it only shutsdown when installing Windows then try the install with only one RAM installed. I know you switched slots but you could try it with just a single module (in case one of them is bad).

It seems to be working without the battery, the prospect of re-opening it all up again really does interest me.

Is there anything i can do to have the battery in the laptop. I dont like the idea of having the laptop without a battery as the power cable isnt the most reliable and is loose.

Thanks alot for the support. Appreciated

In that thread a few people said the battery ran hot. I don't know if that was really enough to make it shut down. Why not try to install Windows running on just electric and see if it can get through 40 minutes of heavy computing. Then you will have a better idea of how involved the battery is to the situation.

HP Pavilion DV5000 has had random power off issues for years. Never a big deal cause as a SE I have a few other machines I have used over the times. Today one of my other main machines went down so I deceided I needed to fix this one today.

After messing with it for a couple hours what I ended up doing was cleaning the cpu/heatsink replacing the thermo compound. Cleaning the inside of the machine out blowing air and using some alcohol where needed.

The MB on the machine has a plastic sheet on one side. This is to prevent metal metal contact with the casings. I didnt like the way mine was looking. I CAREFULLY ripped all of it of and replaced it with some box tape cutting out holes where the touchpad and KB go. I know this is a bit extreme but the thing has been just powering off like no more then 1-2 mins tops for the last 4 years whever I attemped to boot it.

Anyways I am typing this post on it about 5 hours after I put it back together and not a single power off yet. I did update the latest BIOS immediately after I got Windows put back on it.

Just wanted to share this cause I have troubleshot this a few times over teh years and finally have it working.
