HP software no longer available- what to do?

July 1: I was given an hp printer which inconveniently came w/o the software CD ... deskjet 842C

July 2 ... I went to the hp website to attain the driver software and, lo and behold, as of July 1 they are no longer offering MANY downloads or selling the CD's!!

So, what are people to do? Throw their devices away and buy a nice new one made by hp's competitors?

I searched the web for hope, but none was to be found. Anybody have any other ideas I might try?
