I bought a Compaq presario V2000 laptop with xp home edition for my wife from some chic for $50 :-D and it works fine.

Now I want to restore it to the original setup because everthing pops up in this chics name, which of course my wife says must go.

Of course I didn't get the original recovery cds. How do I back up the original software from the computer onto a flash drive and how do I recover the system to the original.

I've looked for all the usual places, i.e. start - all programs - and thru everything for a backup or system recovery. All I find is system restore which is of no help at all.

On my old HP desk top I simply do a restart and tap f 10 and it takes me to the recovery screen and then recovers the system to the original date.

    Help

    Hi,
I don't think you can do a factory restore on this machine, you will need the recovery disc that came with /or was made when the OP first got the machine.
To see if one was made look here... start> all programs>Pc Help & Tools>HP PC Recovery Creater> if this option is still available then she did not create one, go ahead and create one, you will need at least 2 DVD's. these then can be used to either 1) recover to factory settings without a format or. 2)full format with fresh install and recover to factory settings.
If that fails or you do not have that option then I would be looking at lending a OS disc (it must be the exact OS i.e... Home/basic,premium./Pro.
and do a clean install, chipsets and drivers can be found here...

    Hi,
I think that maybe a fresh install of windows is the only route that can be taken at this point, I know it's a tedious job, but, there is nothing better than having a fresh install,it will give the machine a new lease of life!!

    Greetings, bdelapp.

Why can't you change the 'chic's name and perform a good cleanup? Might turn out to be cheaper than having to buy an XP license.

As far as backing up your data - that should be as simple as saving files to a drive. You will not be able to transfer installed programs, however.

You might also consider contacting HP Support - they usually supply restorations for a small price. You may or may not have to jump through some owner verification hoops, but it's worth a shot.

I don't see recovery discs listed for that model at HP (probably the model is too old). Unless you have an XP CD and a license key or want to buy one you don't have too many choices.

Why not go to Control Panel>Users and create a new user with administrative privileges for your wife. Make sure it works OK then delete the chic's account?

There may still be one reference to the previous owner when you right-click My Computer and select Properties on a line like "Computer owner" or "registered to" I believe there are tweaks to change these if they are there which someone might be able to help you with.

    OK... whew
Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
I believe I figured it out, I did a safeboot in each users name and the adminstrator and shared and deleted folders, and then changed names.
It appears I got everything changed except one folder.
    Thanks again
