A friend has tried to send me a photo as .pdf and as .jpeg. They arrive as Firefox HTM and I cannot view them.

Neither of us use Firefox although we've tried it in the past and uninstalled it. Firefox does not completely uninstall but we can't find the left over files.

I run Windows Vista, Word 2010, and Google Chrome.

What do I need to install or alter to be able to view these files? If there is some sort of compatability program, what is it and where do I find it? :confused

Please don't tell me to install Firefox because I do not like that program.

Note my used name -- I really an a dunce at anything technical. :(

    Any and all help appreciated.

To open a pdf file you need Adober Reader installed. Go to adobe.com to get it.

The jpg version should open in windows just by double-clicking the file, no aadditional software is required.

Thanks but I'm told Acrobat isn't compatible with Windows Vista.

I downloaded Acrobat Reader but it doesn't show up in the "open with" options when I right click the .htm document therefore I cannot convert the .htm file to .pdf or .jpg.

    The photo arrives as .htm.

Try opening the file again by right clicking it, and selecting Open With. Select Internet explorer as the program to open the file with.

How are you getting the files to your computer? If you're dragging and dropping off of a webpage then you're just getting a thumbnail used on the webpage itself. If they are attachments in an email you will need to click somewhere to download them. If they are in an email itself you should right click the picture an save it that way. email clients and webpages can be setup differently otherwise I'd give more specific instructions.

    Association in Control Panel

I need to be able to open a photo saved as .htm. To do this, I need to set up associations in my Control Panel.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? Simple, step-by-step instructions please as I truly am a dunce at anything technical.

If you are running Windows 7,

    - Open the folder your .htm photo is in
    - On the bar near the top of the window, click "Organize", then "Folder And Search Options"
    - Click the "View" tab
    - Uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" box
    - Rename the .htm file to .jpg

If it still doesn't open as a photo, try instead renaming the .htm file to .gif or .png (it might not be a .jpg picture)

    P.s.:
With any software-related questions, it's always important to say what operating system you are running.

How is your friend "sending" you these files, by e-mail? As attachments? What is your email client (email program)? Are you receiving them on a web-based email client?

Files do not get magically converted from one file type to another; they should arrive in the same format they were sent. The HTM files you see may be simple links to the actual photos. (HTM, b.t.w., has nothing to do with Firefox, it is just a file format that is recognized by any browser.)

Anyway, the best way to share photos is not by sending them by email, but uploading them to a site like http://picasaweb.google.com/, then sharing them with family and friends. Or even the public if you like.

    Hi

Adobe Acrobat is very compatible with Windows Vista and whoever told you it was not is talking out of their butt!

See pwillener's advice above for options, but the file if attached and not embedded in the email should open with Windows Fax and Photo Viewer.

I don't think changing your associations is a good idea. For one, .htm files are not image files, though they may contain image objects. If you change the association for .htm files, you will not be able to view any Internet pages because .htm files are supposed to be opened by your browser, not your photo viewer.

I recommend you open it with your browser, then right click on the photo and select save as to save it to photo file.

Thanks. If you read my opening post you will see that I listed my OS as Windows Vista, Word 2010, Chrome.

    Re: Association in Control Panel

Thank you for a thoughtful answer. Clearly you read my opening post. I appreciate that.

I tried opening with Chrome and nothing happened. IE asked me if I wanted to make it my default browser. I clicked 'no' and nothing happened after that. The sender uses Avant. Should I download that? Would it make a difference?

On the email itself with a .jpeg attached, I right clicked and tried opening a new tab in a new window and nothing happened. Any download or save I do ends up as Firefox HTML document, even when it shows .pdf in the document name.

I can see that changing file associations in the Control Panel would be the wrong thing to do and I don't want to change that. Odd that it is the only suggestion Windows offers.

Regarding Control Panel -- when I joined, I went through the security suggestions on this site. One of them suggested opening Control Panel and clicking on General. I have no such option show up. Could the error be there?

It's odd because I've never had a problem downloading photos from the sender until now. It is important that I open the photo because it is a book cover I will eventually send on to a publisher.

Just wondering -- should I ask Mozilla for the solution? Neither of us uses Firefox, although we've tried it, so it looks as if the program didn't completely delete. I've searched for it and run several malware and safety programs, but nothing shows up.

My apologies. I thought this was a reply to my other thread about a photo problem.

Thanks, and thanks for the explanation about Firefox. I was getting worried that some hidden files remained on my computer. And thanks for the llink. I'll check it out in a moment.

My friend is sending them as attachments. He uses Gmail. My email is Nucleus, same as I signed in with here. I have only one email program. It's important that I can get and use the photo because it is a book cover I will be sending to a printer later.

I have Adobe Pro transferred from my old XP and it will not open in Vista. It locks up half way through.

The photo I'm having problems with won't allow me to save it as anything but a Firefox document.

Avant? Or Avast? Assuming you mean Avast Anti-malware, no, you do not need the same as the sender.

What is your default browser? Do you know for a fact this file is good?

UPDATE -- I cannot send photos as an attachment either.

Does that make the problem easier to resolve?

    Re: Association in Control Panel

Avant was a browser. I downloaded and then uninstalled because it didn't transfer favourites from Chrome. I use BitDefender Plus. Chrome is my default browser.

Adobe came up with a message that the file might be corrupt. I sent that message to the sender but he hasn't replied yet.

I also tried to send a photo to the sender, as a test, but I couldn't attach it. It seems that the whole "attachment" program is lost or corrupt on my computer.

Does that make it easier to resolve?

Avant the browser - I have not heard of that in years. Anyway, no, you don't need to use the same.

Adobe? Adobe should not be trying to open your .htm file. Chrome should, since it is your default. Maybe you need to call up IE or FF, set one of them to your default, then set Chrome back.

    Re: Association in Control Panel

Adobe won't install on my computer. I have Adobe Pro that I transferred from my old XP but it won't install or open on Vista so I can't even convert the file to Adobe.pdf. All earlier photo downloads are fine, convert to Adobe, it's just this one htm where I have no option to open anywhere.

I refuse to touch FF. I tried to open IE but there was no way it would take me to any sites. It's probably an old version and I haven't trusted IE for years.

The problem lies in the inability to download or send attachments. I've tried with older photos and nothing works. The program associated with Windows attachments must be corrupted in some way but I have no idea how to correct it or where I can download the program again.

If I try to open in Chrome or IE, all I get is a blank page.

You can't transfer a program from one computer to another. You clean install.

With an expensive program like Adobe Pro, you have to remove it from one computer and do a clean install to the computer you want to use it on. (It is not licensed for use on two computers). Get your disk out and install it cleanly.

Depending on the Acrobat version, you also need to deactivate it on the old computer, so you can activate it again on the new computer.

I do not know what 'Nucleus' is, or how it works. Do they offer Help or Support?

P.S. I just googled 'Nucleus', and it appears to be an ISP. They offer webmail, as well as IMAP, POP3, and SMTP (http://www.nucleus.com/email-solutions.html).

How do you access your mail: webmail in your browser, or via an email program like Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, ...?
