Been trying to find some place to take a look at my puter and I cannot believe the trouble I'm having. I have been greeted with blatant rudeness, others that from a brief conversation with them I'm surprised have enough know how to even turn a puter on, disconnected phones, numbers changed but not yet in service and others that want a minimum of 130 dollars to just look at my tower with additional fees incurred depending on what they find...(NOT including repairs, makes no sense) and then there are those that don't have a storefront and will only come to your home which is of course, even more expensive! AAARRRGGGGG....Cripes! I just want to know WHAT piece or pieces of hardware failed so I can replace them. Is that to much to ask? One guy wanted me to bring in my puter (the WHOLE thing including keyboard & mouse) and wanted me to bring in every piece of software I have installed with the reg keys...WT...? I've never heard of such a thing...OS & driver disc's yes, but EVERYTHING? I don't have a software issue, I have hardware failure...puter won't even post. ugh

Why does this have to be so difficult? :( At this rate I'll never get it fixed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/cussing.gif

*sigh* Back to the yellow pages...*wonders* Maybe they all think that because I'm a girl I can't tell them what my puter is or isn't doing?

HA HA dad!:p LMAO...Even if I was to take it there I would pull the HD first knowing what a certain person there has done in the past with info on the HD. Granted, I don't know if they are still there but b/c of what they did, I would never trust taking my HD to any place that works on puters.

Cannot say that guy who wanted all the serials wasnt thorough! did he also ask for drivers licence and passport? ;)

I guess the hardest part is finding a reputable repairperson, one thats recomended as I have no-doubt their are many fly-by-nights, hence the phone N0. changed... disco'd.

Only way to narrow it down Abby would be to try all the parts in a working PC, a longish job, but still one that you could try?

Oh hell...since you twisted my arm.;) Someone who shall remain nameless bragged about puters that were brought in for repairs where people didn't log out from various sites and how he would go to the website and read their private messages and snoop around in other areas of said websites, etc. He justified it by saying it was the persons fault for not logging out to begin with. Well gee...sometimes when a puter goes down suddenly there is no time to log out or if your browser isn't set to clear cookies they remain. In maxthon for example, even though I have it set to clear my cookies on close if it crashes everything is saved and when I reopen it everything is as it was..pages, logins still there etc.

Now, you may say...he was just shooting off his mouth right? Wrong...I saw it being done with my own eyes and to a puter of someone I know IRL...I was pissed and of course it convinced me that I would never take my puter anywhere without pulling the HD or formatting it first. If one does it, it is likely that many do it.

LMAO...I have to laugh now over some of the people I talked to but at the time I was flabberghasted...keeps Chris busy though (my hero) he won't stand for anyone being rude or disrespectful to me at all and doesn't hesitate to call these people and put them in their place.:D

My first thought was to swap out the hardware with a working PC to narrow down what has failed..problem is I don't know anyone that has one I can do it to. I don't know many people here and those that I do, have PC's that are more outdated than mine and all are either Dell's or Gateways which are notorious for not responding kindly to various hardware changes to begin with.

With any luck I'll find someplace to take it although I have stopped holding my breath at this point..I cannot believe that such a simple task as troubleshooting a hardware failure has turned into such a PITA.

Don't know how much it would cost, but...if you paid for shipping and any necessary parts...I would fix it for you!! :) I work on peoples computers all the time, and every one is a new learning experience, so being that there is still mounds of knowledge out there for me to yet acquire...I just tell the individual...I'll check it out, if it's something I feel I can fix, then you pay for the parts and leave it at that, however....if you are pleased with the results, and you want to throw the dog a bone...then I don't turn down donations!!!!

This might be a stupid question, but...I never seen it, so...have you tried working with someone around here to troubleshoot the problem??

@ roger...that's very kind of you to offer and I really do appreciate it:) I to fix computers all the time..it's not at all uncommon to have one here that I need to clean of viruses/spyware or replace/upgrade hardware depending on what the person wants...but in this case I've been SOL as I don't have another puter to test my hardware on so I know for sure what I need to replace.

@ D3...my puter won't even post..no beeps, nada...just what sounds like normal HD activity right up until I usually log in then it just sits there. Bought a new vid card last week figuring that was it based on how it went down in the first place, the fact that the fan on it obviously hadn't been working since I last cleaned my case out and feedback I got from Halo and Adryn but puter is still down. My thoughts now are that possibly my ram is completely gone or MB is fried..maybe my vid card got so hot it damaged the board...I dunno...what should have been a simple task to narrow down the offending hardware and replace has turned into a....scratch that..I'm to much of a lady to say what just went through my head :D

Well...if the hard drive, cd drive, and the fans are spinning...i'm going to take a wild guess the psu is ok...and that pretty much leaves it to the memory and the mobo itself!! Hopefully if it is the mobo...it didn't damage the memory and the cpu!!:(

For what it is worth, going on just the tiny bit i've just recently heard...If the new video card didn't do the trick..."I" would start by replacing the mobo!! In the meantime, I would hang on to that new video card, because i'm thinking that it could possibly be a mobo and video card combination problem!!

I mailed my previous computer from the UK to west coast US and it cost me about $50, FYI.

DHL are an awesome company. Excellent prices and fantastic customer care :)

@Abby...why don't you invite Adrynalyne and his wife over for a vacation ;) He obviously need some time to de-stress and de-puff his face  , and you'd get your PC fixed hehe

Abby, does your PC POST if you remove the RAM? If it does then that would clear the mobo and point to a fried stick.

That made me think...Have you taken the cmos battery out (with the computer unplugged) for approximately 30 seconds, then put it back in?? Most comps have a "CMOS Clear" jumper, but the battery way is more failsafe!! Heck...if the computer is very old (more than 3 years) I would just completely replace the battery!! But anyway...resetting the cmos will reset the bios, and maybe help!?!?

Your both missing something if the mobo or ram is bad thare whouldent be any hard dive activity.. it sounds like the video card .... Was your old video card overheating ?? Its posable that the overheating card took out the mobos AGP slot .... have you tryed a PCI video card ???

Thank y'all for the suggestions.:) Yes, my vid card had overheated...the fan on it had ceased to function..when the puter went down a couple weeks ago and I first opened the tower up there was a burnt smell. I did purchase a new vid card last week but it didn't make a difference. Tried pulling the ram as suggested but puter still won't post. HD now is not making normal start up noises...the little light comes on, stays on for a bit and then goes off...only sound coming from puter (case still open) is the fans. *praying hd isn't toast*...I'm WAY behind on doing backups.

Kodo had also suggested I try re-seating the card again (did & it didn't make a difference) and that possibly the AGP slot is fried. I don't have a vid card to try in a pci slot so I'm pretty much stuck right now with that.

But the good news!:D...Chris talked to the puter guy at work yesterday and told him the difficulty I was having cuz I had no way to test my hardware to figure out exactly what is fried. The guy will be in Chris's dept again today so he told Chris to bring in my tower and he would test all my hardware for me so I know for sure what I have to replace. Yeah! I should know some time today what exactly is wrong.:)

HAHA...you're joking right? He woulda sniffed them out;) LOL

Just got off the phone with the nice guy who tested my hardware. My MB is shot. My CPU is specific to my MB and my ram, while not only very expensive is not compatible with newer boards. So, I need to get a MB, RAM, CPU & bigger PS. Such is life eh? When I break something I do a good job!:(:D

That narrows it down to a new system! Or you could install the HD in Chris's system and dual boot....

Maybe you can do a paypal fundraiser!

Well a MB is not that expensive, but a MB that will work in another system.... may be simply easier to buy a whole new system.

Tell your geek friends what kind of MB you need since some of us have your address and maybe we can pool together and ship one?!?

@ N56 & b00m...I can't thank you enough for your kind offers to help me out but I have to respectfully decline. I just don't have it in me to take something for nothing..it's just how I am. I have to work for or earn what I get...I'm not very gracious with accepting things at all (ask Chris  lol) as I would feel terribly guilty not just b/c a computer is a luxury item but b/c there are others who could benefit from things like a computer far more than I ever would and it's something that is impossibly out of their reach. If (as in the past when my kids were little) I needed a little help now and then to make sure they were fed that would be a different story...that's a necessity, but it did not lessen my guilt or how much I beat myself up over it for getting to the point where I needed help to begin with...even though it wasn't my fault (massive layoffs & getting rear-ended).

While I miss my puter, especially being able to do graphics work and the moderating/assistance I provide in a graphics teaching group, (they are holding my position for me & have spread my duties among the other moderators until I can return) I know that at some point I will be able to get back in the swing of things and I'll be able to feel good about it knowing I was able to get to that point myself. Call it pride, call it stubbornness and some may even say stupidity but hey, that's me.:) At least I have some access to Chris's puter so I can still visit MG so it's not all bad...besides...I can get caught up on my crocheting projects with all the free time I have now.

Thanks again guys...your offer is moocho appreciated:)...
