Never occurred to me before to ask, but how do I know for sure if anything is using the hyperthreading? I have a P4 with hyperthreading. How do I know if is enabled and being used? Thanks.

Hit CTRL ALT DEL and the task manager > Performance Box will show 2 CPU graphs.

IIRC, Device manager will show two CPUs as well.

alright, maybe we're on to something. Where in device manager does it display cpu? How do I enable hyperthreading? I don't think it is. In performance, only shows 1 processor. I checked bios and says hyperthreading enabled.

    Thanks for all the help

To enable hyperthreading you will need to enter your Bios and enable it from their ( just go through all the menus in the Bios until you find the listing and enable then exit & save )

btw, what is your motherboard name and version?

    @ Adryn ~ A RED X in your device manager I'm shocked ;)

just hit f2 or f3 or f5 or whatever your bios button is at launch then go to something like processor it'll ask if you want HT enabled, go to the device manager and it should show two of your processor.

  10. ozorowsky

    ozorowsky Corporal

did that, and it says HT is auto. Only options are auto/disabled.

did you build this pc or was it built for you?

Do you know what the bios version is?

Sometimes reseting the bios by removing the battery for say 10 mins can rectify problems.

Just upgraded the bios today v1.80. I can't put my finger on it, other than I dunno why it says auto as option for hyperthreading rather than enabled. It only says auto/disable as options.

You know, you never mentioned what OS you are running.

Rofl...there is a story behind that one.

Its my wireless NIC and it keeps locking me up while online/during games. So I am waiting for Netgear to release a driver update before I use it again, hence the lack of installed driver and disabled card ;)

Hmmm...you didnt happen to upgrade your CPU w/out reinstalling XP, did you?

    ozorowsky Corporal

nope. In fact, for the heck of it reinstalled xp today. Maybe after I upgrade back to service pack 2 it will detect the hyperthreading?

are you sure it's worth going through all the trouble, I have it disabled and I have no difference between the two and in fact I heard that HT could be bad for games.

Hyperthreading is a mixed bag, Over Rated too.
Some apps will see increased performance some decreased, best bet is test your self, then you can simply disable or enable as needed.

Here is what you should see if HT is enabled in the OS:
