Has anyone ever seen a Hypnotherapist?

My sister and I are seroiusly contemplating going to see one. We're very interested in regression and finding out about our past (lives). Was wondering if anyone has ever had this done or used a Hypnotherapist for any other ailments (bad habits, depression, anxiety, phobia, etc)...

I did some internet searching and found out that we have a lady who practices and lives in our town and has a Masters Certificate in Hypnosis...

One of the books that really sparked our interest in Hypnosis was the book Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian L. Weiss... which is an absolutely intriguing book...

I underwent hypnosis years ago to stop smoking. He had a hard time putting me under then a few hours later I lit up a cigarette!
I still to this day don't know if I was truely in a hypnotic state.
Another past incident, my step-dad went to classes and learned the art of hypnotism. He had no problems putting me under and I was told afterwards that he had me doing funny things! :)

That would be neat if it works for you to see what your past lives were, see how many past lives you've had, where you were, how long ago you lived, how you died. Interesting! ;)

interesting indeed... I am a firm believer that our phobias and unexplained ailments of our current lives can be traced to our past... there was an excellent 2 hour show on A&E this afternoon about Death, the Afterlife, and Reincarnation.... it was called Beyond Death...

I hope they show that again, I like to watch shows like that.
I have heard of the 'theory' that ailments etc can stay with you life after life.
Fears, places that in this life you visit for the first time and when you get there you have this feeling of familiarness.
Years ago I walked through a house that was like half burned down, the smell of fire, burnt wood, overwhelming since it happened the day before. I had such a sense of familiarness, it was like "I've been around this before"
though at that time I never experienced such a smell in my life.
I really felt that maybe in a past life I died in a fire, Who knows!

But, one thing I'd like to say is even though I've only had 2 experiences being hypnotized, I think that when the hypnotist puts you under, if at anytime, you wonder to yourself 'am I really under' chances are that you're not.

Anhedonic...personally I would say don't do it. I investigated this as an option after suffering many years as a suicidal. (I am no longer btw). You have no control once you are 'under'. They can bring things back up that you may not wish to know/remember.

If you really are set on this, then go by recommendation...word of mouth. Qualifications are good, yes, but I would want to hear from people who have been happy with the particular hynotist's treatment in the past.

If they dig up something negative from your past, that your subconcience chose to forget...then you can have horrible (what they call night terrors, instead of nightmares) and flashbacks even in your non-hypnotic state!!!

I guess just make sure you get one that you can trust doesn't get a thrill out of playing with peoples minds...if you know what I mean!!!!

Whenever I refer to past I am really talking about past lives... I tip toe around that phrase because I'm sure there are a handful of people that don't believe that is plausible and I don't want this thread to be a discussion about that.

I'm a very open minded, introspective individual. I'm always thinking about my cognition. If I feel a certain why, I'm analyzing things and trying to figure out what's causing me to feel that way. In other words, I don't have any veiled emotions. This is why I've always ruled out seeing a psychologist. I'm no expert but I didn't feel like a psychologist could tell me anything more about my feelings/problems that I didn't already know. I'd feel like I would be paying out the ass to have me do all the talking. Some people are out of touch with their feelings, emotions, and behaviors. I'm completely in touch with them. I think I need some sort of cognitive therapy or cognitive restructuring.

However, back to the topic. To my knowledge I have not had any traumatic life experiences from my younger years or even the slightest hint that I might have repressed something so I am not concerned about that. And I plan on pursuing this with my 33 year old sister who is also very interested in things of this nature, including the spirit world and metaphysics. We would have private sessions together, and one would sit in on the other being regressed.

I just got a few email responses from the Hypnotist. I am in the process of forwarding the information to my sister and we'll take it from there. If I do pursue this I will definetely revive this thread and post my experience/findings.

    -----------------------------------------------------

My sister and I have a very special connection and bond that is unlike any other with our other 2 siblings. We frequently have the same thoughts simultaneously. Certain times we will call eachother randomly during the week and get busy signals because the other was dialing at the exact same time. One time while i was working at Target, I left my office to use the store's back bathroom and took a very random route towards the back of the store. I was walking with my head down and looked up when I almost bumped into someone and realized it was my sister shopping (neither one of us had seen eachother). Call it a coincidence if you want but strange things just happen between us.

I was very intriged when I read this in the Hypnotists's email reply:

    Time will only tell.

Makes you wonder about those people you see or read about who say they had past lives, If perhaps they have the same feelings with their siblings as you do with your sister?
That's something I've never heard about so far.
I'm openminded also, I do believe there can be such a thing as past lives
I hope when you decide to do this that you're not disappointed.
I for one would like to hear how you make out, it may make me want to try it myself! :)

Alot of this stuff only works if you believe it. My dad is a doctor and he told me a story about a patient who thought they had somthing done on them when they realy had not. Some time later the patient came back and was cured and thanked my dad for doing what he. It worked because she believed it i guess.

Hypnosis is powerful stuff, and you're basically turning over you entire mind to the practicioner, for good or ill.

If you go to one that believes in and works with past lives, they WILL find past lives and have you spitting out details. Of course, they can have you squaking like a chicken too. It doesn't prove anything about past lives, just about their ability to suggest things to you and get you to dance.

well if anybody read the Many Lives Many Masters book you would have a better idea of how the regression surfaces during hypnosis... the hypnotist (in this case a well-respected graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School) more or less gets his deeply troubled patient into the hypnotic state and she begins making the revelations and describing what she sees/feels. He is simply prodding her with questions to get a more detailed account of what she's seeing, not making suggestions, and her revelations are nothing short of fascinating... he published alot of the conversations from multiple sessions (with the patients consent of course), and the questions he would ask her are not very detailed, more or less just asking her to elaborate on what she reports into a more vivid recall...

I'm sure most people will view Hypnotherapists the same way they do Psychic Mediums... because there are phonies, frauds, and scam artists out there, they will naturally be skeptical of all, regardless of whether they have a legitamate practice or not.

Again, all sessions are taped recorded so you don't just wake up and say, WTF happened, and then have to take the person's word for it. And this is another reason why my sister and I wanted to sit in on it together, so we could describe what we heard/saw to eachother, irrespective of what the Hypnotist has to report.
