I’m baffled – Possible Virus

I have come across something that has got me completely baffled. I have seen a number of changes in the way my notebook is running and I do not know if they are all connected as one virus or a number of things including hardware problems. I would love to hear if anyone has experienced the same symptoms before and know how I would go about fixing it. I think the easiest thing for me to do is bullet what exactly I have been noticing and then write how I have attempted to fix it…to no prevail.

    - I will get the BSOD if the computer sits for too long (30min – few hours) and it may happen after it comes back from its screen saver, but I haven’t been able to verify it. It happens so fast that I do not have a chance to see exactly what it says but it ends in “dumping physical memory”
    - When it does reboot after the BSOD, the mouse doesn’t work
    - Needs to be unplugged and battery removed to make it work again
    - After the second, forced reboot, the computer is choppy. It will freeze for a split second up to 5 seconds then will pick up where it left off. It does this over and over
    - Occasionally when I launch my web browser it opens a tiny little window in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, only big enough for the close and maximize buttons.
    - I use MS Word a lot for work and I am getting faded ghost files titled something like this “~$filename.doc” I cannot open them or delete them
    - Occasionally word will just randomly close w/o saving anything

This is all that stands out at this point but I have run through my virus software and it has turned up nothing and I made sure to have the current definitions. I then ran through a couple spy ware filters…again nothing. I worried for a while that perhaps something got knocked loose after my carry on was banged around at an airport but I am starting to think that cannot be the issue. If anyone has the faintest idea of what could be going on it would be greatly appreciated, it has gotten to the point where I am having trouble getting work done in a timely manner. Thanks.
