I am at a Loss -- Please Help

This is my first time ever posting in any forum. I have reached my wit's end trying to remove malware from my system. At one point I thought I may have been infected by Purity Scan. At another point, it seemed that I was under attack from Vundo. I tried to solve the problem through Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Nothing changed.

Then, I found your forum. I followed all of the suggested steps: SpyBot, AVG Antispyware, Bit Defender, PandaActiveScan, GetRunKey, ShowNew; and, as a last resort, Hijack This. I still receive many pop-ups. I will attach my log files to this message and a follow-up. I would appreciate any and all help that could be offered.

I think I may have accidentally skipped a step. I am rerunning your suggested processes. I will post my results when I have completed the scans.

Re: I am at a Loss -- Please Help (Newest Results)

I have completed the suggested processes: CCleaner, Spybot, Counterspy, Bitdefender, Panda Active Scan, GetRunKey, ShowNew, HJT.

Spybot found nothing. The other logs are attached to this post and the following post. I am not sure whether I found and cleaned everything. Originally, I was suffering from pop-ups. Many of them seem to have disappeared. I would appreciate someone looking over the logs to suggest whether there is something else I should do. Thank you, in advance, for your time and attention!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on
the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    docftp

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill
    button.
    docftp

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill
    button.
    docftp

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions
including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1826C0C4-0B11-4C03-BDDC-1FBE99323A4F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayy.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\atbkmuls.dll",realset
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayy.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: docftp - c:\windows\microsoft.net\docftp.dll (file missing)
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all
files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to
    your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system
restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I completed the suggested steps. When I ran Process Explorer, I did not find docftp. I continued on as suggested.

    When I ran HJT I did not find O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1826C0C4-0B11-4C03-BDDC-1FBE99323A4F} - C:\\WINDOWS\system32\ddayy.dll; however, I found a line that listed everything prior to the C:\\. Moreover, I was unable to locate 04 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\\Windows\system32\atbkmuls.dll",realset and 020 - Winlogon Notify: ddayy - C:\\WINDOWsystem32\ddayy.dll.

All of the other steps worked well. The system seems to be working fine in the short time that I have used it since running the processes. I browsed the internet for a little bit and did not suffer from any pop-ups.

I have attached the log files you requested.

If my system is clean, should I keep the programs that I downloaded to address the problems, or should I delete them understanding that I may need to download them again later if another issue arises?

Thank you so much for helping me!

We will cover this when we get to our final steps.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Now goto this website: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and click the Browser button. Then navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\mrhwrkol.exe (which is on your PC) and select it. Then click Submit. Copy and paste the results of the scan into your next message.

Okay that is what I suspected but I wanted to be sure. Delete the C:\WINDOWS\system32\mrhwrkol.exe file. Use safe boot mode if necessary.

After getting it deleted, attach new logs from ShowNew and HJT.

    How is everything working?

I deleted the C:\WINDOWS\system32\mrhwrkol.exe file. I have attached the ShowNew and HJT logs. The system seems to be running great. It boots much faster than before, the internet connection seems to be running faster, and I have not received any pop-ups.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I completed the final steps and everything is working great. Thank you so much for your help!
