i am working on a pc that thinks its a mac

    i have a computer that i am working on right now that thinks it is a mac. no one i know or have talked to includeing both staples and hp's tech support has ever heard of this problem. but if you go to up date windows xp it sure enough gives you an error that says thank you for your intrest but this update is for a windows computer only if you want to update your microsoft for mac programs go to microsoft.com/mac/. and that is about it. any help would be apprecated

    update your internet explorer version to either 6 or 7. Its a generic error message when ie isn't the latest version.

    and the reason your 98 machine gives same error, is 5. something is the last supported version of ie for 98.

    But the OP isn't working on a 98 computer.
    What version of IE shipped with XP? wasn't it 6?
    I had to update to IE6 when I installed a security CD sent by MS in Feb. 2004 that had software up to Oct. 2003.
