In a previous post, I said I did not understand hackers...

Well, yep I didn't, someone has informed me that the people that are answering my questions and helping me are "hackers"

The people that try to get in ur email n enter ur computer are "crackers", completely different intentions/morals.

Hacks/Hackers are more advanced computer users that understand programing, software and can tweak it. (we used to call them programing tech writers) A few of them work in our IT Dept. under programing titles.

Hacks can help you, like the shortcuts, fixes mods tell us. Instead of having to follow 2 pages of instructions, u type a few lines to fix something.

Hackers don't call themselves crackers, but a cracker will pose as a hacker...not sure about that one, someone with more knowledge can explain that to you. Think it's like a CPA that cooks the books kinda thing, CPA would not put CPA.Crook in their title.

Anyway I just wanted to say sorry n please forgive me if I offended any of you.

    Smiles,

    Peg

    I guess.

When I say hacker, its someone who "hacks" into a system using their own knowledge, for example.

A cracker is nothing more than a script monkey.

    Thats my opinion anyway.

    I definately don't consider myself a hacker.

I tend to define it a little more simply:

Hackers are those who go where they shouldn't, but do so because they can-- either benignly or maliciously. The verb "to hack" doesn't necessarily imply criminality. I am not a hacker, but I might use a patch or fix that some might call a hack.

Crackers are those who defeat copyright protections of commercial software.

If you are refering to the post you made in the Google thread, I understood what you meant.

I don't think of myself as a hacker or anything along those lines. We were talking about what Adrynalyne lovingly calls "script monkey" crackers and their thinly veiled help sites, who are failed, angry people, who want nothing more than to destroy other peoples computers because they can.

I don't think you offened anyone.

EDIT: I think I might have just now though. rolleyes

There are 3 categories of Hackers:
    - Highly Skilled Programmers
    - Computer/Network Security Experts
    - Hardware Modifiers

There are 2 types of Hackers:
    - White Hat (Good)
    - Black Hat (Bad)

Yes, you can justifiably call some of the regulars here Hackers.:major

N56... you are partly right. Crackers are orig from northern Fla and Sou Georgia. BTW, I didn't mean that in a derogatory sense. I have been called a hillbilly, a redneck, a hick, and I don't take exception to it. but "white trash" would be another story. :).
