My old beloved phone is breaking piece by piece and I need a new one. I have to wait until January before I can get the upgrade price on a phone and I don't think that this phone will last that long.

After doing some research, I wanted a Dell Streak 5 because it would be the perfect size but I just checked and they aren't selling them anymore because they released the 7's. The 7's too big for me to carry around and the 5" would have been the perfect size. So, more research and I came across this phone.

It has good reviews and it's exactly what I wanted (a touch screen with an actual keyboard) plus I have an preferred account with dell so I ordered it. Anyone know anything about this phone or have it or something?? It looks good based on the reviews but I'm hoping I don't regret it.

I cannot comment on the phone itself, as I have never used one; though Windows Phone 7 is great and I am certain you will love it.

A Windows phone!? Hope you like rebooting before every call...:-D Just joking, looks like a nice phone. I also like the actual keyboard. Touchscreens are nice, but sometimes I like an actual keyboard.

For you, the number is 800-get-lost :p

Ok, So got the Dell Venue Pro delivered yesterday and it’s really nice. I’ll give a tiny review incase anyone else comes across this post who is looking to buy this phone.

    Pros:
    • The screen is very large, and very crisp and bright.
    • The touch screen is very responsive and slides seamlessly from one app. to the other.
    • The keyboard, although smaller then the one on my old phone, types wonderfully. I had no problems with it and didn’t even hit the wrong keys by accident. The predictive text isn’t as annoying as it is on most phones.
    • If you sign in with a Windows Live ID, you have access to a bunch of cool, free (not all of them are free but they have a section) apps and games to download.
    • Office mobile is really nice, I used it a lot on my old phone (for note taking) and this one is definitely a step up.
    • The camera takes ok pictures, they tend to be a little blurry when taken with the flash.
    • It easily connected to my email accounts.
    Cons:
    • The battery life really sucks. With minimal use, checking facebook a few (3 or 4) times and sending/recieving a handful of texts, the battery last about a day. I can’t imagine how long it would last with heavy use but I can’t stay connected to the network that long (more on that later).
    • The placement of the button used to take pictures is kind of awkward. You have to hold the phone with two hands because the button is on the right side near the bottom.
    • The phone is heavy. It’s not overly heavy but heavier then every other phone I’ve had, it definitely weighs the pocket down.
    • I don’t like that you can’t really customize it, you can’t choose your own ringtones and you can choose your own wallpaper but it stretches any picture out horribly.
    • The MicroSD card isn’t removable. If you remove it, voids your warranty and could possibly render the phone useless. I have all my songs, pictures, etc saved on my old SD card, making them unswappable is kind of ridiculous.
    • The Wifi can only connect to unhidden networks, I haven’t been able to connect to my own wireless network because of this.
    • I don’t know about phone call quality or clarity because as stated before, I can’t stay connected to the network.
    • Which brings me to the possible deal breaker: I can’t stay connected to my network in my house!! I go from Edge to No service (never connects with 3G) with in seconds and then back again. If I simply PICK UP the phone, off the table or my bed where it’s lying, it will automatically switches to no service and stays there. I know it’s not a problem with my providers network because the 3 OTHER phones I have, a Samsung flip, a Windows Mobile 6, and an Android phone, have always been/stay connected. Sure sometimes (not often) it drops from 3G to Edge but I still have service, I can still send/ receive text, make/receive calls and surf the internet. Having a phone with no network coverage is positively useless to me and I saw on Dell's forum that many people have this problem with coverage. I am going to give it until Monday and if I still have no service, I’m going to send it back.

It’s kind of sad because I really like this phone.

Bummer about the network issue, hope it gets resolved.

Music, pictures and other media are transferred through the Zune software. It is a bit more than simply swapping out an SD card, but once the software is set up on your computer, the phone can sync any files you choose.

    HTH,

Wow neat Dya as I have a Win7 Phone also, a HTC HD7 but its the same software and the next update in "mango" is going to move this phone to a newer level and one I do like, as while its not a everyday, fashion phone like the iPhone as its a workhorse, it will bring it far more advanced I feel than the iPhone.

    Mango info HERE

@Fred, while its Windows based, TBH its much more stable than the iPhone and Android for me, and I have or used both (still have an iPhone) plus Zune which is the backend and update and sync app for the WM7 phones destroys iTunes in stability.

@Dya, sadly all smartphones batteries suck, my HTC HD2 and HTC HD7 + iPhone 3G can last only 2 days before a charge if used alot, if not its longer and the HTCs are better than the iPhone, the plus with the HTCs are that you can buy a new battery, you will find that hard with an iPhone.

for customisation, wait till the "mango" Update, it should cover that as far as I know as in ringtones etc, as for main screens it will be the same tiles but they will be more active as similar to the "people" tile, so weather will change etc and if you not tried it yet the voice commands will be even better, hole the windows button down and say "calendar" and see what happens ;) but in Mango it will be better still, and its still in this guise one of the best voice command phones around.

Apps are coming daily and not at iPhone levels but getting their.

Dunno on Wifi as I can connect to mine and any other visible one ok, check the settings.

Clarity of calls is down to your network and likely not the phone as I find this WM7 HTC HD7 better than my old Nokia N70, iPhone 3G, HTC HD2.

As for connection status I would say its the phone over software and maybe the Dell is not the best, the Samsung and HTC ones are better IMHO.

You get TWO DAYS?!?!?! My HTC Thunderbolt goes through at least two charges a day if I'm using its 3G/4G services. So much so that I bought the PowerSkin case for it to double the battery life...but if I'm using it a lot I still have to charge it halfway through the day.

Just using it as a phone, the battery lasts forever, but I use internet a lot.

PowerSkin makes battery cases for a bunch of different types of phone now, by the way...they're a little spendy, but they're worth it.

Yep at least two days but I will be honest in stating as a lot is not 24/7 usage but mixture of internet, and email but looking at new apps, I think the bad bit on smartphones is wifi and bluetooth, those two zap power like nobodies business, especially BT, so if not using BT turn it off as well as look at the apps you are using and do they need to update every 5mins? change the schedule of apps and email etc

If I was to start using my phone as a movie player the battery would die within hours! thats the price you pay for a 4" + screen!

I tend to narrow down the apps to update when I use then as in weather, email , stocks etc, this saves the battery a bit.

Absolutely not one of my apps auto-updates and I've never used bluetooth. Wifi I only use if I can't get signal, as my area is split about in half between 3G and 4G. LOL I just spend a lot of time uploading photos and looking things up online, as well as Facebook. Supposedly, the battery holds 340 minutes of talk time, and the battery in the case does as well. I think that translates into about 180 minutes of internet time.

TBH Tibbs and having used these smart phones for years, the battery life spiel is way off as they are crap really in longevity, in reality the screen is the drain, huge screens take muchos power, and we if using these phones need to appreciate this sadly, until they come up with new batteries.

My iPhone has everything conceivable turned off BT, roaming, Wifi, any app updates (all set to manual) and it drains now in about 2 days, with no usage, worst think on iPhone is you cannot buy a new battery easily, hello Mr Apple

Nah... we will have to agree to disagree on this one, do you have a Android phone, better make good use of it as the patient war is coming and MSFT and Apple hold a stack of patients that could kill the Android OS as it is now, hence Google buying Motorola's mobile division ;)

My daughter bought me and Iphone 4 for my birthday. I appreciate it, however, going from a basic phone to an Iphone has not been fun for me. My old phone charge lasted two days. My IPhone a few hours. My old phone ( old Blackberry, that I just used for calling and txting) had an alarm that you could set, shut off the phone and the phone would turn itself on when it was time for the alarm to go off. If I shut off my IPhone the alarm does not go off, if I lower the volume I cannot hear it. If I shut off alerts the alarm does not go off.
I charged it to 100% shut it down and the next morning it was at 73%!
The phone is two weeks old, it took a week for my daughter to get it to me.
I am thinking I need to go to the Apple store to have the battery checked and to find out if there is a way to use the alarm without hearing txt and phone alerts.
Not real happy with this phone so far. Though I really appreciate my daughter getting it for me for my birthday. Nice video's of my grandsons!
