I am in the market for an AMD/64 Bit mobo 754 w/SATA Raid. I have an ATI9700 Pro, 1 Gig of PC3700 (2x512) DDR, and 2 WD Raptors. With gaming in mind, somewhat value priced, and possibly considering third party sys/case cooling solutions, overclockability, maybe socket 939...etc., what brand/type/features would you suggest as a purchase for a mobo/CPU combo with the above factors in mind? TIME TO SHOW OFF YOUR SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE AND THX IN ADVANCE!! ;)

Try zipzoomfly.com, look for a Abit KV8pro and a Amd64 3400 retail with 1mb L2 cach this is socket 754 and the price right now is very good. The board will oc nicely. If you plan future upgrade of the cpu or want duel channel memory 939 is better but will cost more.

Thanks Doby, I did in fact get the mobo from ZipZoomFly, but I was only able to get a 2800+ from PortaTech for a mere $112.00. Hopefully with the Overclockability of the Abit board, and an adaquit cooling solution, I'll be able to dial it up, but to be quite honest with you, I'm just glad to break into 64 Bit technology on such a shoe string budget. I'll be using a third party hsf an ACS64U SILENCER64U, I imagine either the board or the hsf itself will have a backplate, if needed at $17.00, hope it will suffice. I've had pretty good success with using a simple cooling solution, cosisting of a 120 mm fan lower front, side and blow hole fans configured properly to either blow in or out depending, and an exhaust fan in the mid to upper back that creates a nice flow thru current. I built a friend of mine a similar system on an MSI Neo board with a 3400+ Other than that, all the other parts are from a previous build and they are in good working order. Thx again for your reply Rick. Hope you and yours are having a great holiday season.

Don't worry about it the board will have a back plate, I know the manual is confusing. The board I recieved was the latest by that I mean revision 1.1 and 17 bios. There is only one more bios update 19 but most reports indicate it don't do much. 17 will run fine with the 2800. This is why I recommended ZipZoomFly becides price.

There are reports that some retailers are still shipping revision 1.0 and that would not oc to good from what I have read.

Your cooling sounds good. Make sure you have a good quality psu with something around 24 amp on the 12v rail. This has been recomended by fellow builders of 64 systems.

Let us know when you get it running!
