I am having serious problems with my computer. I can only boot it in safe mode. when I don't boot it in safe mode the screen comes up for user log in but freezes. I have only had this computer for 2 years. I am wondering if maybe I accidently did something to it or what. I don't know how to figure this out. One day it just quit booting unless I did it in safe mode. I have put virus software on here and everything and can't get anything to work. Any Ideas????

    Moved to software forum.

This could be a software or malware issue.

You need to tell us what you can and can not do in safe mode w/ networking.

Also brand and model of computer, and what version of windows you are running.
Did the computer come with any disks? If so, what do the labels on the disks say?

I have an Acer. Windows Vista. When I run it in safe mode I can run it with networking. In fact when I made my post today I was on the computer I'm having problems with. I have tried restoring it to a previous date but that only worked for about 5 minutes. I have thousands of pictures and music files on the computer and am afraid to lose them if I take it to get it fixed. The computer has two hard drives.
It didn't come with any disks except for Microsoft office which I had geek squad put in and a virus protection which I have already replaced since its been two years.

Below is all of the information I have off the computer

    Acer Aspire
    ASE380-UD480A
    4800+ AMD Athlon 64x2 processor
    2GB DDR2 Memory
    400GB SATA Hard disk
    DVD Dual Drive
    9 in 1 card reader
    Windows Vista Home Premium.

    Hope that helps.
Thanks guys for getting back to me
I hope you can help me
Thanks sooo much for your time!!

    1. From safe mode, get the files you want off and saved. Either move them to the other hard drive or get an external hd and move them there. If you need help with this, ask.
    2. See if you can borrow a Vista disk from anyone (it should be the same flavor, I think) then you may be able to do a Repair as shown here

on this page, the first option assumes you have a windows install Vista disk. The steps are the same as link in #2 but no pictures.
If you scroll down further, you will see pre-installed options. That might be your situation.

It is important that before you try to repair anything, you do have ALL the files you do not want to lose backed up safely on a different hard drive.

If none of the above works, then you might have to resort to a factory restore. I think the Acer has a hidden restore partition on your hard drive.

Ok so since its dual drive I can move everything to the other drive so I won't lose it? Thank you so much for taking time out to help me :). Also do I have to put windows vista back on there or can I do windows 7?

How do I go about moving everything to the other drive?

Again thank you soooo Much for helping me out!

    Hi,

Plodr is giving you good advice.

Just to give you some help on backing up your files. I'm thinking that you only listed one HD in your specs above. Are you sure you have two Hard Drives in the machine?

Try typing in Diskmgmt.msc in the Start Search box in the Start Menu. Do you see a Disk 0 and a Disk 1? If so, then look for which drive letters (D:,E: etc) are located on Disk 1. They should be the drive(s) that you want to move/copy your files to. (Disk 0 should include C: drive which is most likely your Vista installation--you want to copy your files to one of the drives listed on Disk 1.) example--Disk Management window.

Just create a folder on a drive letter located on Disk 1, something like SafeKeeping and copy all your important files into the folder. (I just open one window with the new folder that I want to copy the files into and then open another Explorer window to find the files I want to copy and then drag-n-drop between windows.) After copying files, if attempting to repair the Vista installation causes more problems they should be unaffected.

Ok I have Drive C and Drive D. Drive D is completely empty with 181gb of space left on it. Drive C is half full. If I transfer everything to Drive D would I be able to clean out drive C and not Harm anything on Drive D?
I'm in the process of transferring everything to Drive D but I don't want to do anything to Drive C until I know if it won't affect anything on Drive D.
    Thanks again for your help

By the way Drive D is not the CD Rom. That is Drive E.

This will work as long as you are VERY careful not to format the entire drive or partition D.

If you are careful to only format Partition C you should be fine.
