When I turn on the other computer everything starts normal until when the startup window is supposed to pop up! Instead I get a "winlogon.exe" message saying an error has occurred and the program must be restarted! It then automatically restarts and continues this process until I unplug it! I cannot access anything! I can't get that far without this popping up and restarting! Please help! We just had a friend who is an IT guy over the day before this started happening! He updated all the Windows 2000 Professional programs (that's what's on the computer) and more antispyware and virus protection! How can this be fixed if I cannot access anything?

    Hi

Don't think that this will be malware related, but can you tell us the full error message as that will hopefully narrow this down?

But I do think you may need to get your IT friend back over as he may have to perform a repair install of W2K.

"winlogon.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You wil need to restart the program. An error log is being created."
That is the message that comes up! Please help! I plan on getting another computer for Christmas but we need to access files and are unable to get to them!

Can you start the PC in Safe Mode ok at all? ( Tap F8 to enter safe mode at boot )

If you can remember did your friend install PCAnyware, Ghost as well as did he also update your W2K from SP2 or SP3 to SP4?

DO you also have the original W2k CD?

Didn't even think of that.....I can get to the some screen that says cmd.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator> and a flashing cursor! Should I type in anything?

Hi, without knowing what was installed its hard to find a possible cause, as it seems your PC was working fine before the upgrades and installation of new software?

A last resort would be an inplace re-install as that error is connected to either software or drivers that are incompatible with w2k or a corrupted install of a Service Pack, SP4 did cause some errors like that on certain PC setups, which is why I ask what software was installed or updated.

But instructions for an inplace install

BUT I would chat to your IT friend first.... as they may have more experience of w2k than me as they will be able to sit infront of the PC and diagnose it live rather than blind on the internet.
