I can't believe I'm turning into my father

My son is 16, and girls and knocking down my door to get to him. ( It was never like that for me ). My fatherly instincts and moral code tells me to teach him the right way to go about things and not to give into pressure and keep these girls at arms length, concentrate on school and good grades.

BUT my, "use to be 16 year old mentality," is pushing me to tell him to grab all you can:-D:-D:-D:-D.

I did listen to my fatherly instinct and did the right thing, which made me think back and realize I'm my father:(. When I was growing I would have given anything for the opportunities that are presenting themselves to my son. I even remember thinking that when I grow up and have a son I'm gonna teach him everything I know and he is going to... yeah yeah yeah, you know the rest of the story. But now that I'm the responsible one I have to do the right thing. but there is a small part of me that wants to say go get um.

I know I made the right decision but I would have never thought I could turn into my father, but I guess thats what growing up is all about...

My father used to say 'wait until you have kids of your own.' And I thought, yeah, I'd let him get away with whatever he wanted, which is what I wanted to do! My son is only 8 years old, and I have already promised myself NOT to let him get away with some of the things I did. So, you know, I'm glad I'm turning into my father. You hate to admit it when you're 16, but 'father knows best (sometimes)!!'

Those hormones are louder then logic so you have to be the stable voice of consciencesie; Father.
it'll all pay off one day, that or he'll be a rock star :-D

Bugga, you so right. I hate the rap (with a silent 'c') and dance music my kids listen to (THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!) My dad was into Frank Sinatra, Perry Commo and Nat 'King' Cole and he hated my Clash, Rats and Sex Pistols. There's no accounting for taste.

The biggest regret I have, however is that I never listened to him more. He was right, life is hard if you don't knuckle down in school.

My grandparents offered the best advice for this, and most other life challenges. The first time I know this was said was when my dad told his mother that he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant (with me). They were expecting the worst, and she told him "If you don't want the peaches, don't shake the tree." I always thought that was great. Also, I know it's in other songs, by other people, but there's a line in a Sublime song that sticks out to me (and they still might be trendy enough to use with your son). That line is: "A taste of honey is worse than none at all."

My kids are 5 and 6, I hope I have a while yet.. Good luck.

Everybody says, "I wish I knew then what I know now". Well they could by hearing it from parents.
Mine told me, "Things are different then when your were a kid, that was the olden days"
It's the same down through the years. The cloths, hair and music are different that's all.

While I'd normally make a joke here, I'd say just buy him a box of condoms. No matter the type or amount of advice you're giving, if he's got the chance to try it out he's going to do it, because he just can't help himself. So give him the tools to keep himself safe, and out of the fatherhood business instead of just hoping that talking with him will do the trick.

    It won't.

That's true, our social morals and human nature have to find the same page someway

I have bought him condoms and left my door open for conversation and advice. At the same time I'm pushing grades and school.
I may be my father but I haven't forgot being 16.

Good for you. You are truly wise beyond your peers. ;)

Tim Taylor said it best I think: Keep the car in the garage for a long time, and then when you finally take it out, make sure to use a car cover.

Definitely a good quote. Good luck.
