I have been trying to update a laptop I haven't used for a while. Let me confess my tale of idiocy: in order to install a current version of Norton, I needed to update my version of Windows 2000. Yep, that's right, I went on the 'net naked to the Microsoft site to download the patches etc. Of course, I must have contracted every virus known to man. I tried to install Spybot, ZoneAlarm, and AntiVir. I downloaded these on a "safe" computer and burned them onto disks and then loaded them on my laptop. I thought I was getting somewhere when I finally loaded the AntiVir, it looked like things were working OK. But when I booted the system after loading AntiVir, the system shut off normally, but would not boot up. I can't cold boot because there is a battery inside the laptop keeping it running. What can I do?

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Unplug your battery to create a cold boot if necessary. But don't do that while Windows is running.

I apologize for the initial panic post. I decided to actually read your instructions and I have so far been able to construct a floppy boot disk, which allowed me to boot into safe mode. Then I ran my anti-virus software and deleted a whole bunch of worms. I will continue to follow directions and hopefully I'll reach a point where I'll be able to ask intelligent questions.

Okay! If you are able to boot the PC now, you need to do as much of the below as possible.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
